Drivers traveling on Church Hill Road/Route 6 next week can expect more delays on top of those already being created by projects in one of the town’s busiest commercial areas.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) has rescheduled paving work that was originally planned for earlier this month.

On Tuesday, May 28, through Friday, May 31, from 9 am to 3 pm each day, repaving work will be occurring along the sides of roadways in areas where stormwater catch basin equipment has been replaced.

In addition, there will be four successive 12-hour overnight work periods for road milling and repaving of the travel lanes of Church Hill Road. Crews are expected to be working from 6 pm Tuesday, May 28, through 6 am Wednesday, May 29. Three additional overnight work periods will follow, with the overnight work scheduled to conclude at 6 am Saturday, June 1.

Work has been underway since spring 2018 on a $2.85 million CT DOT roadway improvement project designed to generally enhance traffic flow and safety in the congested area. The repaving next week is to resurface roadways at and near the realigned intersection of Church Hill Road, Commerce Road, and Edmond Road.

The repaving had initially been scheduled for the daytime work shifts from Monday, May 6, to Friday, May 10. Kevin Nursick of the DOT notified The Newtown Bee on May 9, however, that the schedule for the paving project had been delayed due to issues with the contracted asphalt plant’s ability to provide the needed materials.
