Head O’ Meadow Elementary School and Middle Gate Elementary School fourth graders sang songs for winter concert assemblies recently, before performing the concerts for family and friends at evening events.

All of Newtown’s schools were scheduled to hold concerts between December 3 and January 28 as part of the 2018-19 Winter Performance Schedule announced by the district in November.

At Head O’ Meadow’s concert assembly on January 8, Principal Tim Napolitano greeted the full-school assembly by saying, “We’re so excited for our fourth grade concert.”

The students sang under the guidance of music teacher Cynthia Holberg, and Newtown Middle School music teacher Jonathan Pope played the piano. The concert was then performed for family and friends during the evening of January 9.

Songs sung for Head O’ Meadow’s winter concert included “Goin’ to Boston,” “Salute to the Armed Forces Medley,” and “Give Us Hope.” For the finale, the students sang “Everything is Awesome,” and when it came time to finish the song, the students held up decorated paper plates with letters on them to spell out the school’s initials, “HOM.”

Two days later, Middle Gate’s fourth grade students sang their winter concert under the direction of music teacher Tina Jones, on January 10, during two school assemblies. The evening performance of the concert was held later that night.

Songs sung at the second concert assembly included “Everybody’s Going on a Sleigh ride,” “A Perfect Winter Day,” and “Season of Wonder, Season of Light.”

When it came near the end of the song “Bring on the Snow,” Principal Christopher Geissler surprised students by showering the singers with cotton-balls for snow while dressed in a snowflake outfit.
