Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door mini-bus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*Senior Center will be CLOSED ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 9 for Columbus Day.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINIC, Tuesday, October 10, is filled but there is plenty of room Tuesday, October 31, 10 am to noon. Sponsored by Danbury Visiting Nurse Association. This fills up fast. APPOINTMENT ONLY; call 270-4310.

*Sign up for COMPUTER CLASSES on Monday and Tuesday, from 3 to 4:30 pm.

*TAI CHI  & CHI KUNG will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 pm. Steve Kurimai will instruct the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination and relaxation.

*WALKING FOR FITNESS every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 pm for 30 minutes.

*Let’s get together for the BREAKFAST CLUB every Thursday. Meet at center and take the van to the Blue Colony Diner. Limited to 12 persons at a time. Call to reserve a spot.

*REMINDERS: *CRAFT SESSIONS: Make Christmas trees on October 17 and Christmas spheres on October 24.

*AARP DRIVING CLASS on Monday and Tuesday, October 16 and 17, from 1 to 5 pm is filled.

*ANNUAL HARVEST BAZAAR, Friday, October 20, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday, October 21, 10 am to 2 pm. Those who would like to help and/or contribute in making items or baking for the bake sale should contact The Senior Center.

*Free MAKEOVER CONTEST. Tell us in 500 words or less why you, or someone you know, could use a FREE makeover. Entry deadline is Friday, November 10. Call the Senior Center for more information. The winner will be announced on Thursday, November 16, at 1 pm, at our Feeling Good from the Outside-In Tea. Prizes will be awarded then.

*SWEET HART BUS — Call 748-2511 for reservations and 830-4399, their direct line, to go home so you don’t have to wait at doctor’s office. Also, Saturday service between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm for weekend appointments or shopping.

*BLOOD PRESSURE checks on second Thursday of each month or the last Wednesday of the month.

DAY TRIPS

*OKTOBERFEST Celebration at Platzl Brauhaus on Monday, October 18, in Pomona, N.Y. Come dance, sing, and enjoy the music, excitement, and great food. Depart 9 am; $70 per person. This great trip fills up fast…Don’t delay to sign up!

*FIREPLACE FEAST at the Salem Cross Inn on Wednesday, November 8. Relax by the fire or lend a hand as dinner is prepared for you in old Colonial style. Musical entertainment will be provided. Depart at 9:30 am. Cost is $78 per person.

Monday: October 9: Columbus Day: CLOSED

Tuesday: October 10: Boneless chicken cacciatore, egg noodles, green peas, whole wheat bread, pear slices;

Wednesday: Quiche Lorraine, diced carrots, broiled tomato, croissant, seasonal fresh fruit;

Thursday: Creamy seafood chowder, unsalted crackers, chicken salad on a bed of lettuce, with tomato wedge and Waldorf salad, soft breadstick, chocolate brownie.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: October 16: Chicken croquettes with chicken gravy, brown rice pilaf, broccoli florets, wheat dinner roll, apple pie;

Tuesday: October 17: Swedish meatballs served over egg noodles, tossed salad with cucumber and creamy Italian dressing, parmesan cheese, garlic bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

 

Activities Schedule, October 9-13

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise; PM computer classes, chorus group;

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts;

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts;

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting; PM knitting, cards.
