Girls, Led By Medalist Houle, Edged By One Stroke And Boys Fourth In SWC
The two-time South-West Conference champion girls' golf team from Newtown High School was dethroned - barely - by Joel Barlow of Redding, at Brownson Country Club in Shelton, on May 30.
Barlow shot a round of 401 strokes on the 18-hole course, and Newtown shot a 402, led by event medalist Sarah Houle, who shot a 79. The third-place competitor, Brookfield, shot a 412.
Casey Muckell shot a 105, Kira Kelly had a 106, Sydney Marino a 112, and Madison Findley a 117 for the Nighthawks.
The Newtown High boys finished fourth in their championships, at Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury, on May 26. Newtown shot a 344. Masuk of Monroe won the competition with an 18-hole stroke total of 326, Immaculate of Danbury (332) was second, and Joel Barlow of Redding (339) placed third.
Ryan Patrick led the way for Newtown with an 81. Mike Meyer and David Brestovansky earned All Colonial Division accolades.
Newtown finished 10-5 overall and 9-3 in SWC play. Newtown will look to build upon the success this year as it returns mostly underclassmen, Coach Bobby Pattison said. Newtown loses two seniors, Meyer and Matt Kretz.
