Storm Creating Closings & Cancellations

The winter storm that has been moving north for the past few days arrived in Newtown around 7 am Saturday morning.
A Winter Storm Watch that had been posted by the National Weather Service on Friday for Newtown and most of southern Connecticut, to be in effect from 7 am Saturday until Sunday morning, has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. The warning now covers northern Fairfield County, northern New Haven County, northern Middlesex County, and northern New London County.
The warning is in effect until 7 am Sunday, January 24. New accumulations of heavy snow will now reach 6-10 inches locally, which is an increase over the 4-8 inches predicted for the region on Friday, January 22. Winds will be predominantly from the northest, 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph possible. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s.
The snow storm is expected to remain in the area through tonight.
At least one motor vehicle accident in Newtown had been reported as of 10:30 this morning, but the young driver involved was checked for injuries at the scene and did not need to be taken to a hospital.
Newtown High School athletic events planned for today have been affected by the storm. The NHS girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams were to have participated in the Southern Connecticut Conference Invitational in New Haven today. The event has been cancelled.
Newtown High's hockey team scheduled game at Weathersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown has been postponed to Monday, January 25. The game will now be played at Danbury Ice Arena, beginning at 4:20 pm.
Businesses have also begun reaching out to The Newtown Bee to alert readers and residents of closings, cancellations and postponements.
C.H. Booth Library Director Brenda McKinley has announced that the town library will be closed today. No fines will be charged for items due today, Ms McKinley added.
Vasi's International Gymnastics is also reportedly closed today.
A program by Dan Wolinsky scheduled for Sunday, January 24, at Congregation Adath Israel, has been postponed. "The Names They Left Behind" will now be presented on Sunday, February 7, at 2 pm, due to the inclement weather.
NYA Sports & Fitness Center has announced that it will be closing at 2 pm.
EverWonder Children's Museum is closed for the day.
An open house to be hosted by Newtown Boy Scout Troop 770 this afternoon at St Rose of Lima School has been postponed to Sunday, February 7.
12:24 pm: Your Healthy Pet will be closing at 1:30 Saturday. Owners plan to reopen on Sunday at their regular 10 am time.
Out Of Town Notes
Hollandia Nurseries of Bethel has also announced that both locations will be closed today.
The University of Connecticut has announced that all classes that would start at noon and later have been cancelled, and all campuses will close starting at noon. The university's Stamford and Avery Point campuses already are closed for the day.
Essential employees will still report to work, including those in public safety, dining services, and facilities operations.
Individual activities may still go on, so people are advised to check with the organizer or sponsor, including Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, according to the university.
In addition, the UConn vs Georgetown men’s basketball game at the XL Center in Hartford will be played as scheduled, and buses that were reserved for student ticket holders to take to and from Storrs to attend the game will be operating.
