The Babe Ruth League is not just for boys anymore.

The Newtown Girls Youth Softball Association has announced it is now a member of the National Babe Ruth Softball League. The new league – which will increase the ability to offer young Newtown athletes an opportunity to learn the sport of softball – will incorporate two levels of season play, tournament play, All-Star and travel team activities.

Registration will take place in the spring.

The new board of directors for the 2001 season is: Pete Blomberg (president), Paul LaFRancesca (vice-president), Richard Van Waalwijk (treasurer), Kathy Blewett (secretary), Mark Renna and Cosmo Alberico (player agents), Donna Van Waalwijk (player certification director), Al Legros (equipment director), Connie Caruso (sponsor coordinator), Dave Bloshuk (director-at-large), Nancy Bowen (fields and facilities), Roberta Walston (publicity director), Brad Greene (umpire director), Paul LaFrancesca (student league division director), John Marcucilli (10U direcotr), Al Legros (14U director), Nancy Bowen and Paul LaFrancesca (directors of training and player development).
