Bridgeports Lost

4 to 6 In Sunday’s

Softball Contest

The Newtown Country Club Softball squad down Earle Smith’s Bridgeport aggregation with Francis Hubbell and the Leahy Brothers combined, Sunday afternoon on the Club’s field by a score of 6-4.

The highlights of the game included good-natured arguments over and of Umpire “Bob” Camp’s decisions and the hitting of “Och” Alison, who batted 1000 for the home team. Alison in five times at bat found Bridgeport’s star ringer (Pitcher Sharik) for two triples, two doubles and a single, enabling Newtown to take, what looked to be, the more efficient team into camp. “Doc” Desmond, the home team’s ace tosser upper, backed by good support, showed up well against the more experienced Bridgeport pitcher, by allowing 14 hits against his opponents 16 and struck out five of the Smith outfit, while Sharik was able to fan only four of the Newtown men.

The first double play in the home team’s short career was pulled off in the last half of the third inning from Desmond to Lawson to P. Smith, when a short grounder to Pitcher Desmond caught a Bridgeport man on both first and second.

A large audience turned out, in spite of the lack of sunshine, to most politely root for the home team and threw nary a pop bottle at the umpire.

The line up for Bridgeport include: Randolph, 3b; Sharik, p; Minty, ss; Liptok, c; B. Leahy, 1b; J. Wade, 2b; Leiss, rf; Hubbell, cf; Barker, lf; E. Smith, sf. For Newtown: Alison, 3b; Lawson, ss; P. Smith, 1b; Comstock, lf; Desmond, p; Hillhouse, c; J. Boyle; sf; G. Stuart, 2b; F. Howard, cf; C. Glover, rf.

Score by innings:
