The Newtown High School co-ed cheerleading squad recently completed a successful 2003-04 competitive season with a first-place finish at the Western Connecticut State University competition sponsored by the USA Wildcats.

“We were very happy,” said co-captain Amber Butler. “That was the best we have performed anywhere. We hit things that we didn’t hit anywhere else.”

The Nighthawks finished third at the South-West Conference championships back on January 31 and then finished second at the Chief Challenge at Nonnewaug High School on February 14. On February 28, the squad was third at the CSA Spirit Festival at Quinnipiac College.

“It was a perfect ending to a good season,” said Butler.

And with all that behind them, the cheerleaders began working hard to recruit new members for the 2004-05 squad. They planted posters at the high school, the middle school and at St. Rose School and held tryouts this week to try and bolster the unit.
