Highlights From The Hardwood

Youth girls’ and boys’ recreation and travel basketball results are as follows:

Girls

Midgets

The Purple Cheetahs played a hard fought game against the Celtics. The Cheetahs’ scoring was led by Amanda Hagischi, Catie Teixeira, Elizabeth Teixeira and Emma Archiere. Defensively Peri Meeker, Erin Kornhaas, Julia Weiland and Chelsea Fowler played tenaciously, breaking up many plays and stealing the ball. Molly McCleary and Eliza Roth were crashing the boards coming up with a few rebounds each.

The Murphy Basketball Orange Crushers continued to improve again this week. The high power offense was led by Erin Phaneuf, Shea Murphy, Rachel Arena and Amyla Posey, while the tenacious defense was lead by Kate Petersen, Grace Eurell, Chloe O’Connell and Taegan Smith.

The Deadly Sharks turned in a fine performance Saturday morning at the Hawley Gym. Shannon Kelleher, Emma Magazu and Julia Gerace led the way on defense and created numerous offensive opportunities. Sarah Savinelli and Abby Stites cashed in with baskets and Julia Doyle, Ella Hage (two big hoops) and Maddie Hintze turned in great efforts on both ends of the floor.

Grade 4

Green Hornets 28, Tootsie Rolls 14: The Green Hornets were led by Kaley Meisenheimer and Kylee Raiano, who together scored 14 points. Ella Marsh and Savannah Duffy contributed numerous rebounds and assists, while Cecilia Floros led the swarming Hornets defense. Carlie Smith and Meghan O’Rourke combined for 10 points for the Tootsie Rolls. Mary Celentano directed the offense and led the team in assists, while Jillian Carrino led defensive effort.

Celtics 30, Purple Crush 28: Cyleigh Wilson and Genevieve Murray combined for 24 points to lead the Celtics. Shannon Jackman and Shauna Tucker led the defense. The Crush was led by Kelsey Pearson and Katie Ryan who combined for 12 points. Ashley Hammond and Annabel Terry contributed strong defensive games.

Tootsie Rolls 20, Celtics 19: Kaitlyn King and Holly Ankers led the Tootsie Rolls with a combined for 12 points. Colleen Phaneuf and Katie Dirga played strong defensive games. For the Celtics, Cyleigh Wilson and Shannon Jackman combined for 13 points. Ann Burns and Caroline Malin led the defense.

Green Hornets 28, Celtics 11: Juliette Cryder, Virginia Hepp and Megan LeBlanc combined for 22 points for the Green Hornets. Laura Augenbrau contributed 4 assists and Alea Willis led the Hornets’ strong defensive effort. For the Celtics, Genevieve Murray and Taylor McPadden combined for 9 points. Shauna Tucker led the Celtics with 4 steals.

Filan LLC Nighthawks 26, Purple Crush 16: The Filan LLC Nighthawks and the Purple Crush played a great back and forth game. The Nighthawks prevailed over the tough Purple Crush in the end led by top scorers Sarah Tressler and Angela Carriero. Game Captain, Ryssa Swanson and Kali Ryder (2 points) were all over the court setting screens for teammates to help the Nighthawks to victory. Jane Shearin and Hallie Filan played their usual relentless defense with Shearin adding two baskets. Megan Riccardi added a basket and was top rebounder for the Hawks with Faith O’Hara leading the team in steals. The Crush’s offense was led by Katie Ryan, Annabel Terry and Olivia Steare, combining for 12 points. Kelsey Pearson and Sydney Howard played tenacious defense, each coming up with several of steals. Ashley Hammond and Eileen McCleary battled on the boards to grab numerous rebounds. It was a tough loss for the Purple Crush.

Grades 5-6

Raymond James Financial Shock 18, Tasmanian Devils 12: The Tasmanian Devils drew first blood early with a great rebound and shot by Nathalie Schickendanz. The well then seemed to dry up and after a number of fast break baskets by The Shock, the Tassie’s found themselves in the familiar position of having to make a comeback from a double-digit deficit. Behind the hawking defense of Ally Tassiello, Sienna Cummings and Sarah Brittin, the Tassie’s closed the gap but in the end the basket would not let them in. Offensively, the Tassie’s were led by Ava Petrellese (6 points) and Jackie Moccio. The Shock’s team defense was the key to this hard fought victory. Julia Clark and Angela Vodola had key defensive stops late in the game. Rebecca Gavel led the fast break with 6 assists and an early basket. Lexi Leidlein and Abby Pearson were the scoring leaders on the offensive end.

Monstrosity 25, Shooting Star 8: Top scorers were Carly Swierbut and Danielle Otero with 6 points each. Katie McCabe scored 5, Cailin Wilson scored 4, Anna Cartelli and Jenna Carvalho each scored 2 points. Carvalho pulled down the most rebounds and McCabe snagged the most steals. The Shooting Stars fought a hard battle against Monstrosity. The Stars were led by Lauryn Ankers and Allie Eurell with their aggressive play. Larkin Hoffman, Charli Condon and Sarah Widman led the Stars offense.

Hip Hoopsters 29, Space Narwhals 14: Hip Hoopsters dominated the first quarter with Elizabeth Weisgerber leading the offense with 10 points and following up with another 6 points for a total of 16 points for the game. Natalie Kelchner was second in scoring with 6 points. Camryn Findley and Emily Krasnickas played aggressively on defense stealing many passes. Space Narwhals experienced several (minor) injuries during the game. They managed many shots to the hoop, unfortunately Hip Hoopsters monopolized the rebounds. Space Narwhals’ offensive scorers were Briana Castellano (4 points), Hayley Lambert (4 points), Cory Mangold (4 points) and Julia Sullivan (2 points). Defensively, Teresa Forlenzo led with 4 picks and an awesome steal.

Inspirations For Your Home, LLC Mean Green Fighting Machine 26, Dr. Della Schmid Chiropractic Centre/Sunburst 14: Sunburst was the first to score but by the second quarter was not able to keep up with Green Fighting Machine. High scorer for Sunburst was Jacklin Gouveia with 6 points and Jackie O’Leary played aggressive defense. Tied for high score on Green Fighting Machine was Shannon Cheh and Alexandra Futterman with 6 points each.

Grade 6

Newtown 30, Bethel 26: Julia Haskins led all scorers, tallying 8 points for Newtown. Marcella Daily added 6, while Erin Burns and Kira Smith each posted 4 points. Rylee Mulligan, Lauren Carrino and Julia Doyle added 2 points apiece, and Ashley Santore played strong defensively.

Newtown 35, Trumbull 30: Erin Burns and Kira Smith pounded the boards, playing tough offensively and defensively for Newtown. Rylee Mulligan ran the offense at the point, causing numerous turnovers for Trumbull. Julia Doyle and Sarah Houle contributed to the win, combining for 10 points and several assists. Julia Haskins and Lauren Carrino were the defensive standouts for Newtown.

Grade 7

Newtown 29, Wilton 23: With the game tied after three quarters, Newtown went on an 11-0 run early in the fourth to seal the victory over the defending league champs. Newtown had a season-high 8 assists for the game. Meghan Doyle weaved her way to the basket for 11 points, while Hailey Conrad (2 assists) played tough underneath, scoring 7 and blocking 3 shots. Olyvia Shaw (4 points) battled for 8 rebounds against a tall Wilton squad. Jess Maturo (2 assists) helped with 7 boards and added a 3-point play. Maturo had 4 steals, Shaw 3 steals, and Nikki Zaccaro (2 points, 4 rebounds), Colleen McCarthy (3 rebounds), Jillian Pieretti (2 points), Natalie Shaker (3 rebounds) and Cassidy Datin (2 rebounds) all had 2 steals apiece.

Grades 7-8

World Wide Coverage Corporation Spartans 33, Style 20: Emily Neave and Kayla DiSibio each scored 10 points to lead The Spartans to victory. Marissa Thill chipped in 6 points, while Haley Williams added 3 points. Grace Larsen and Emily Dirga both scored a basket in the win. Olivia Hamula continued to shine on the offensive end for the Style, scoring a game high 13 points. Annie Hoffman added 4 points and Amanda Solomon handed out 3 assists. Nicole Russo provided the defensive pressure with 3 steals and Cally Peterson pulled down 5 rebounds.

One Eyed Pig Da Bears 35, CTS Micro Flintstones 16: Sarah Bender and Madilyn Cole each scored 10 points for Da Bears. Lindsay Hoyt added 5, while Megan Kelleher and Brittany Meisenheimer scored 4 each. Madeline Bridges rounded out the scoring with a basket. Anna Buzzanca scored 6 points to pace the Flintstones and Emily Bell chipped in 4. Sarah Spillane handed out 3 assists and Jaimy Fellin swiped 4 steals. Samantha Lotko provided the rebounding presence by pulling down 8 boards.

South Cove Globetrotters 43, Celtics 29: Chrissy Moore led the Globetrotters to victory with 13 points. Kamdynn Moroney handed out 6 assists and Jessica Shairer provided the defensive energy with 9 steals. Chrissy Moore also led the team with 7 rebounds. Kayla Kordish led the Celtics with 8 points and Allie Indelicato chipped in with 6. Ashleigh Shaw scored 5 points and pulled down 6 rebounds and Michaela Jackman and Lexi Tucker added 4points each.

E-Lemonaders 33, The Blitz 31: The E-Lemonaders edged The Blitz in a thrilling comeback. Down by 12 points halfway through the third period, The Blitz went on a 12-0 run to tie the game at 28. With 30 seconds to go and trailing by two, Emily Montoya scored on a drive to the basket to tie the score at 31. Not to be outdone, Amanda Albanesi hit an 18-foot jump shot with four seconds to go to give the E-Lemonaders the win. Albanesi led the E-Lemonaders with 12 points and Shannon Lynch handed out 4 assists. Erin Tressler played outstanding defense, swiping 4 steals and Abbie Kohler was dominant on the glass with 12 rebounds. Jess Mullany scored 10 points for The Blitz on an impressive variety of jumpers. Emily Montoya and Maddie Pirone combined for 15 points in the losing effort. Carly Kreshpan continued her solid play with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.

Grades 7-8

One Eyed Pig Da Bears 43, Style 25: Lindsay Hoyt scored a season high 16 points for Da Bears. Megan Kelleher added 10 and Sarah Bender contributed 8 in the win. Simone Afriyie added 3 points and 5 rebounds. Olivia Hamula and Tessa Leon Gambetta combined for 15 points for the Style. Kayla Ward played outstanding defense and Annie Hoffman and Cally Peterson combined for 12 rebounds.

E-Lemonaders 40, CTS Micro Flintstones 9: Aimee Talbot paced the E-Lemonaders with a team high 12 points. Ashley Lynch chipped in 11 and Shannon Lynch handed out 6 assists. Erin Mingey had 3 steals and Abbie Kohler pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory. Anna Buzzanca scored 3 points for The Flintstones and Muriel Daccache handed out 2 assists. Jaimy Fellin provided the defensive spark with 5 steals and Sarah Spillane grabbed 8 rebounds.

World Wide Coverage Corporation Spartans 28, Celtics 19: Top scorer was Emily Neave with 10 points. Marissa Thill scored 8, Kayla DiSibio scored 6, and Emily Dirga and Haley Williams each scored 2. Neave took the lead with assists, steals, and made free throws. Michaela Jackman and Allie Indelicato each scored 6 points in the losing effort for The Celtics. Tegan Doherty added 4 points and 3 steals and Lexi Tucker added 2 points and 3 assists.

The Blitz 28, South Cove Globetrotters 27: The Blitz found itself in another nail bitter that again came down to the final play of the game. Jamie Calandro scored on a put back to give The Blitz what seemed to be a comfortable five-point lead with less than a minute to go. The Globetrotters had other plans and mounted a furious comeback. Jess Shairer nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the lead to two. The Blitz turned the ball over on their next possession and Caroline Caporale scored the tying basket with 18 seconds to go. The Blitz inbounded the ball and raced down court to try and score the winning basket. Jamie Calandro was fouled in the act of shooting as time expired and was awarded two free throws. Calandro missed the first and with both teams and all the spectators watching, sank the second free throw for the one point win. Chrissy Moore led the Globetrotters with 10 points and Jess Shairer added 7. Courtney DeMeglio and Hannah Logan each scored 2. Carly Kreshpan had a team high 10 for The Blitz and Jess Mullany and Maddie Pirone chipped in 6 apiece. Madeline Marlin added 3 huge points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Boys

Midgets

The Defenders continue to gel as a team on both offense and defense. On the offensive side, baskets came from Gregory Gargano, Peter Taweh and Danny Pond and others. While on the defensive side Eric Gay, Matt Weisgerber and Devin Herbstman kept it locked down as they played tough deny defense and good help defense. The team also did a great job passing the ball ahead and finding the open player and chasing down loose balls.

Lyle Petrellese was the offensive star for The Bolts, making several impressive jump shots. Liam O’Sullivan played outstanding defense and had numerous steals. RJ Eller and Ryan Chieffo also had excellent games for The Bolts. Jonathan Taylor also scored on several impressive drives to the basket.

The Black Dragons showed energy and fire this past weekend by showing a strong effort in all phases of the game. Drew Poseno, Jake Holme and Jonathan O’Leary led the scoring attack, while Miller Tetrault and Michael Jewell showed exceptional passing, rebounding and teamwork. Trevor Hislop and Cameron Petrelli had a strong defensive effort against the Huskies.

The Gecko offensive attack was led by the guards John Sullivan and Noah Dinallo. Jack Petersen made outstanding shots all over the court, while Andrew Bazuro and Alasdair Cathart pulled down many rebounds. The Gecko defensive stars were Ben Paley and Mason Woodard.

The Musketeers ran the fast break to precision, as well as the half court set, led by Jack Street, Luke Hannan, Jacob Hinden, Mark Sadowski, Aditya Ramadhar and Julian Totir.

Kyle Turk and Liam O’Connell led the way for the Nighthawks playing hard-nosed defense and crashing the boards. Ryan Bicho chipped in making multiple steals. On the offensive end, Gus Coffey, Brendan Adams and Aiden Finnegan scored multiple baskets on a variety of great shots.

The Maroon Magic was shorthanded, fielding only seven players, but made the most of the day with extra effort by all. Tough defense from Sean Reilly and Teddy Teraszkiewicz was balanced by the aggressive offensive play of Zander Kasbarian and Kyle Reilly. Will Brock and Julian Crone hustled up and down the court, with Emmett Dowd tough underneath hauling down the rebounds.

The Doritos were led by the strong play of Patrick Boyle, Cody Meier and Steven Berard. The defense was headed by Michael Elston, Sean Kerins and Daniel Jaeger. Carter Jasinski played an all-around great game. Matthew Berard and James Ciaramello played great on both sides of the court.

The Slammers enjoyed another great weekend of basketball. Stephen Leuci had a well-rounded afternoon. He rebounded, scored, and played great defense. Frank Corigliano had his best week yet. His game has improved on both ends of the court. Aiden DellaCorte continues to be one of the best shooters on the court, including a buzzer-beater to end the game.

Grade 3

Hurricanes 9, Mavericks 6: Trevor Barrett, Stephen Cotton and CJ Demers each scored 2 points. Luke Hannan, Barrett, Karl Miller and Demers played great defense. Trevor Jacozzi and CJ O’Connell were great on the boards and playing help defense.

Grade 4

White Mavs 34, Easton 24: Jack Mulligan exploded for 24 points to lead the White Mavs to a victory over Easton. Kyle Good and Jack Lydon helped to control the boards, while Jack Kuligowski led the offense with strong play at point guard. Kyle Sullivan added 6 points with some nice outside shots. Charlie Eppers and Max Wrage plated strong defense while Sammy Eppers and Patrick Oberstadt had strong all-around games.

Blue Mavs 47, Mavs (3rd Grade) 10: Keenan Murphy led the offense with 10 points in the Blue Mavs 46-10 win over the Mavs 3rd Grade team. Josh Taylor added 8, Joey Rios tossed in 7, and Kieran Coffey, Nick Kalra and Liam Murphy each connected for 6 points. Zach Droukas, Drew Mitchell and Dillon Robinson were tough on defense, with Droukas and Robinson each contributing 2 points to the scoreboard. Karl Miller sunk 2 outside jump shots for the tough Mavs 3rd Grade squad, while Trevor Barrett, CJ Demers and Trevor Jaccozzi each connected for 2 points. On the boards, Neil Kalra grabbed 7 rebounds and Jacozzi snatched 5.

Blue Mavs 26, Huskies 13: The Blue Mavs took an early 10-2 lead after the first quarter in their 26-13 win over the Huskies. Joey Rios led the offense with 12 points. Josh Taylor added 6, Liam Murphy tossed in 4, and Kieran Coffey, Nick Kalra and Dillon Robinson each connected for 2 points. Drew Mitchell had 2 steals, while Zach Droukas and Keenan Murphy kept the pressure on the Huskies’ offense, holding them to just 3 points in the final quarter.

White Mavs 20, Amity 4: The White Mavs got off to a strong start with points from Max Wrage and Patrick Oberstadt and cruised to the win. Jack Mulligan led the White Mavs with 10 points, while Kyle Good and Jack Lydon controlled the boards. Sammy and Charlie Eppers played strong defense, while Jack Kuligowski and Kyle Sullivan helped execute the offense from the point.

Grade 5

Newtown 42 Mavericks 17: Newtown was able to get to the rim and clean up on the offensive boards and ultimately not enough of the Mavericks open shots dropped through the net. Tucker Garrity scored 9 points, while Jack Hannan, Thomas Luciano, Ben Futterman and Gavin Connors all chipped in a bucket. On the boards Garrity had 6, Futterman 5, Harry Lucas 5, Hannan 4 and Norberg 4. Tucker Garrity also added 6 steals.

Grade 6

Celtics 30, AdvisoryTrust.com Doughnuts 27: The Celtics got out to a double digit lead in the first half, but went super cold and also made some unforced turnovers. After losing the lead, however, the C’s were able to regroup and make key buckets in the closing minutes to seal the victory. Cayden Dunn played great on both sides of the ball, and contributed 8 points, 6 boards, and playing tenacious D against the Doughnut’s top scorers (Aidan Ford 10, Mark Hall 6). Also playing well on offense was Ben Drew, who helped distribute the ball against the Doughnut’s D in both the man and zone sets, while also forcing 2 steals, all on an injured leg! The C’s defense was led by James Hobar, who again consistently gives his all each game, tries his best each play, and is not afraid to sacrifice his body when diving for a loose ball or getting a rebound in the paint. James Hobar and Cayden Dunn also took turns at point guard.

Swishers 34, Black Hawks 28: The Black Hawks offense was led by Robert Murray, Thomas Skrelja and Evan Landgrebe all with 8 points each. Defensively Ben Terry, Doug Carriero, Ricky Mariani and Jack Ciaramello played solid games. Robert Murray and Thomas Skrelja led the scoring for the Blackhawks.

Thunder 26, Swishers 25: The Swishers in their second game of the day fought valiantly against the first place Thunder only to come up short by 1 point. Grant Moxham led the scoring for the Swishers with 8 points and Ryan Williams, Wyatt Moyer and John Payne played extremely well on defense keeping the tough Thunder team to their lowest point total all season. The tandem of Eugene Citrano, Matt Sadowski and Alex Janiak proved just enough to squeak out a Thunder’ous victory. Kenny Malin and Kai Toomey played well on both ends of the court.

Buckateers 37, Monstars 27: The Monstars could not respond well to a tough half court press initiated by the Buckateers, especially in the fourth quarter. Marc Carlson and Ryan Patrick scored often for the Monstars and Joshua Dunn and Chris Stenz pulled down a ton of rebounds in the losing effort. Dylan Champagne scored 9 points and had 4 steals to lead the Bucketeers to their second win of the season. Liam Jones had an outstanding all-around game scoring a season high 8 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Harry Eppers had a devilish of a game scoring a rare triple-six, 6 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Sam Parsons also had 6 points, a season high for him as well, and added 3 rebounds. Cameron Champagne, Travis Huzina and Tom Fitzgerald combined for 8 points and 12 rebounds.

Thunder 40, Buckateers 35: A top of the key jump shot for 2 points by Eugene Citrano as well as a penetrating drive to the hoop that led to a 3-point play in the winding last two minutes of the game proved enough to fend off a feisty Buckateers team. Citrano pumped in 13 points and Alex Janiak 12, to lead the Buckateers. Adam Farley played aggressively at point guard. The Buckateers almost cracked the first place Thunder, leading by two with a minute to play, in a very well-played basketball game by both teams. Liam Jones and Harry Eppers led the Buckateers with 7 points each. Jones also had 2 assists, 4 rebounds and a pair of steals to complete a great weekend of basketball for him. Cameron and Dylan Champagne and Tom Fitzgerald each chipped in 5 points while Jack Vaughan, Travis Huzina and Sam Parsons combined for 6 points. Champagne also had 4 assists and 4 steals in the game.

Hot Shots 42, Sox 35: Kent Mullen had his best game yet for the Hot Shots, pulling down 8 tough rebounds and adding in 5 points. Jack Murray, Nate Jones and PJ Pfeiffer were all tough as well on the glass all contributing key rebounds. Greg Brissette led the Hot Shots in scoring with 11 that included 3-4 from the foul line. Tristian Crone had some great takes to the basket scoring 8 and Matt Principi dropped in 6. Michael Narducci was all over the floor with 5 steals. The Sox played short handed with only seven players but managed to keep the game very close. Dylan Sock scored the most points by any player this season with 22 and David Kohler pumped in 8. ‘Dogbone’ Daubert and Owen Sullivan played tough on both ends of the court.

Tornadoes 36, Invaders 23: A wicked storm invaded the Reed gym this past Sunday. The Tornadoes blew out to an aggressive 28-8 lead by the third quarter from great offensive play by John Finnegan, Adam Wolff, Brian Montoya and Avi Bhaya. Bobby Ward, Owen Walsh and Rhett Saunders were also a force to reckon with on defense. The Invaders made a comeback in the fourth quarter with gutsy play by Jackson Dooley including a nose stinger (man that hurt) and Michael Arthur. Tyler Gaynor played well on both sides of the ball and Dominic Scalzo led the scoring for the Invaders.

Sox 39, Doughnuts 27: The Doughnuts played hard with more than 40 shots, but could not get them all to fall. Kyle Gaynor and Jimmy Doutney did a great job with rebounds and defense. James Heran played an aggressive game. Aidan Ford had outstanding defensive hustle, coming up with multiple steals. Danny Grosso handled the ball well, controlling the offense. Ian Shull played his position nicely, being where he needed to be and showing good hustle. Nick Harper was working on his give-and-go throughout the game. Mark Hall played an excellent defensive game and worked well with Harper.

Shoes 53, Doughnuts 52: The Doughnuts needed more sugar. The boys pounded the boards during the last quarter but struggled to score. The fourth quarter defensive play of Nick Harper, Josh Harper, Mark Hall and Ford limited the opposition’s scoring. Teddy Wojcik played his best game of the season.

Grade 7

Newtown Mavericks 47, Weston 31: Tied at 29 after three quarters Friday night, the Newtown Mavs unleashed their full court press, going on an 18-2 run to finish out the game. Unselfish guard play by Sam Grossano (7 of 9 free throws), Mike Liberante (4 points) and Connery Mayer (6 points) led to quick fast breaks, while energized hustle from Will Huegi (5 steals) stymied the Weston Blue squad’s offense. Strong play in the paint by Gavin Stubbs (10 rebounds, 12 points), Jason Hebner (7 rebounds, 4 points) and Brian Flood (5 rebounds, 8 points) kept the game even until the fourth quarter barrage.

Newtown Mavericks 35, Orange 36: Austin Engler dished out 4 assists and Tommy Kitzmiller penetrated the Orange men zone well and efficiently racked up 2 assists to Andrew Lee (11 points) and Gavin Stubbs (5 points), but the Orange big front court proved to be too much for the Mavs, despite a late fourth quarter surge. Sam Grossano (5 points) handled the point deftly and Michael Liberante (2 points) played great defensive all game, while Will Huegi (4 points) caused numerous turnovers and sunk his layups.
