Garden Club To Host Victory Garden Roundtable Discussion
The Garden Club of Newtown is planning a Victory Garden roundtable discussion with some of its founding members who created and organized a large garden to provide vegetables for fellow residents.
On Tuesday, April 22, these members will share what they have learned about working with nature to provide good food. They will focus on the facts and foibles of starting from seed, crop rotation and companion planting.
In this program they will share their plans for the coming summer and the changes they will make to improve harvest yield.
The garden club has been part of the successful Victory Garden program for years. Vegetables and herbs grown and harvested by club members are donated to neighbors in need through FAITH Food Pantry, Nunnawauk Meadows retirement community, Newtown Senior Center, and Hospitality Hall at Newtown Congregational Church.
During the 2023 growing season, GCN donated more than 400 pounds of produce to FAITH Food Pantry, Nunnawauk Meadows retirement community, and Newtown Senior Center.
Last year the club installed raised beds within the rows they maintain.
Located within Fairfield Hills, The Victory Garden was created in 2011. The garden club has worked and harvested within the garden since its launch.
The program will be held in the lower meeting room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street. It will begin at 1 pm and the public is welcome. There is no fee.
