Saddle Up Scouts: Brownies Visit Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard
Brownies from Girl Scout Troop 34408 visited the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard at its Fairfield Hills headquarters for an informative and fun-filled equine experience on April 13. The Scouts were treated to a tour of the headquarters, stalls, and riding ring, where they even got to strap on helmets and test ride some of the mounts. For many, it was their first horseback riding experience.
Sergeant Selena Carella, First Lieutenant Stacy Rameor, Staff Sergeant Nadia Gluch, Second Lieutenant Josie DiNello, and Private First Class Courtney Gibson graciously gave their time and shared their expertise.
Horse Guard members taught the scouts about the history of the Horse Guard; they got to see century-old saddles up close and get a feel for just how heavy saddles are. Scouts got to check out uniforms worn by troopers for past presidential inaugurations as well as in parades. They also toured the tack room and stalls, and got to catch a glimpse of the expansive, picturesque field space where the horses spend parts of their days.
Scouts got to handle horse grooming bags while learning about the various tools — from hoof picks to brushes — used to care for the horses, and see a bit of what it takes to be a member of the Horse Guard.
In the end, each scout earned her Pet Care Badge and was given a gift by Horse Guard volunteers — a stuffed horse to commemorate the experience. They also took home some great memories and knowledge of the inner workings of the Horse Guard, one of the oldest cavalry units in continuous service in the United States, chartered in 1808.
