For those who like the idea of spending time outdoors, propelled by their own two feet, but are unsure how to begin, the Timeless Newtown series can help.

“Essentials for Safe Hiking,” a free presentation by Newtown Hikers Coordinator Linda Dunn, will be presented at Nunnawauk Meadows Community Room, 3 Nunnawauk Road, on Thursday, April 24, at 10 am.

This program will prepare those who are new to hiking so they feel more confident about engaging in this new activity and get the most enjoyment out of their hikes. Dunn, who has been hiking for many years and is the schedule coordinator for Newtown Hikers, will present how to plan a hike, what to do in an emergency, what hiking equipment is needed, and offer safety tips.

She will have equipment displayed and offer handouts. Those planning to attend are also encouraged to bring questions for a Q&A that will follow the talk.

Newtown and its surrounding environs have so much beautiful open space with trails for all levels of hikers to explore. What are you waiting for?

Monday Morning Hike

To put what has been learned at this presentation into action, Newtown Hikers member Lou Picchione will then offer an easy hike at Wolf Park in Monroe on Monday, May 5 (rain date May 9). Registration for the hike will be available at Linda Dunn’s program.

The hike is sponsored by Newtown Parks & Recreation and Newtown Hikers.

Newtown Parks & Recreation, Newtown Hikers, and Nunnawauk Meadows have partnered to bring these events to the community as a part of the Timeless Newtown series, which promotes self-image, nutrition, mental and physical health for seniors and offers intergenerational opportunities that break down the myths about the natural process of aging. The talk and hike are for anyone 18 years and older.

Please note, due to limited parking at Nunnawauk Meadows, a bus at Newtown Senior Center will shuttle attendees to Nunnawauk’s Community Room starting at 9:30 am. Registration for the free, fun and relaxed event is required and available these ways: Nunnawauk residents sign up at Nunnawauk Meadows Office; Newtown Senior Center members sign up at Senior Center; all other community members sign up by contacting coordinator Andrea Zimmermann at 203-200-9745 or apzwriter@yahoo.com.

Organizers and partners hope to reach and educate all ages on ageism, and foster positive change, through a months-long series of “Timeless Newtown” programming. For those who like the idea of spending time outdoors, propelled by their own two feet, but are unsure how to begin, the series can help.
