Newtown High School’s baseball team nearly overcame a seven-run deficit in an 11-10 loss to host Fairfield Ludlowe, at Kiwanis Field, in the April 8 season opener.

The Nighthawks took the early lead with a pair of runs on a Wes Keayes first-inning single. The Falcons answered with five runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. Ludlowe led 6-4 through two frames and put up another five spot in the third to seize an 11-4 advantage.

NHS scored six runs on four hits in the sixth. Jonathan Moseman had an RBI single, Kieran Garrity singled home another run, Danny Leyva drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another, Lucian Place smacked a two-run double, and Keayes drove in another run on a single. Newtown collected nine hits. Keayes and Garrity both had three with Keayes driving in three runs. Moseman had two hits. Jamie Piccuillo walked three times among nine NHS walks, and Keayes stole two bases.

Moseman pitched well in relief, going three and a third scoreless innings of three-hit balls with a pair of strikeouts and two walks.
