The Town of Newtown is excited to announce its official recognition as a Recovery-Friendly Community, an achievement made possible through the combined efforts of local leaders and community organizations.

Spearheaded by Nicole Hampton, the new director of Newtown Parent Connection, along with Amy Mangold, director of Newtown Parks and Recreation, and Dorrie Carolan, executive director and founder of Newtown Parent Connection, these key figures are working alongside the Newtown Prevention Partnership and Newtown’s Recovery Champions to launch this initiative in celebration of World Health Day on Monday, April 7 and Alcohol Awareness Month in April. Together, they are committed to supporting recovery from substance use disorders and creating long-term community enhancements to aid those in recovery.

This initiative not only supports individuals in recovery, but also reduces stigma, increases awareness, and promotes a culture of compassion and inclusion for all residents.

The town’s recovery-friendly efforts, in collaboration with First Selectman Jeff Capeci, focus on raising awareness around substance use disorders, addressing the impact of mental health, and fostering an environment where individuals in recovery can thrive. The goal is to reduce substance use, prevent overdoses, lower crime rates, and create a community built on support, empathy, and understanding.

“We are proud to stand together as a community that prioritizes the well-being of all residents. By embracing recovery-friendly practices, we provide a platform for individuals to rebuild their lives, free from stigma,” said Carolan.

Mangold added, “Newtown is committed to creating a compassionate environment that offers both hope and support to those on the path to recovery. We continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and help provide the support people need to heal.”

Hampton said, “Newtown Parent Connection is honored to be part of the Newtown Prevention Partnership as we celebrate Newtown’s designation as a Recovery Friendly Community, fostering connection, support, and hope for all.”

Debbie Aurelia Halstead, Newtown’s town clerk, was instrumental in developing the new Recovery Friendly Community page on the official Town of Newtown website, providing an easily accessible resource hub for those seeking help. Through this resource page, the town will offer a comprehensive list of community services available to residents in need.

This achievement has been made possible through the collaboration of multiple organizations, including Rebecca Allen, MPH, director of Recovery Advocacy, and CT Community for Addiction Recovery. These partnerships ensure that Newtown remains a place where recovery is both celebrated and supported, while fostering a sense of connection and well-being throughout the community.

The Newtown Prevention Coalition, in partnership with Newtown Parent Connection and the Town of Newtown, remains dedicated to promoting health and recovery. This initiative serves as a foundation for a safer, healthier, and more compassionate community, where recovery is supported and celebrated for all.
