Newtown Interfaith Council (NIC) has planned a Seder to celebrate Passover on Sunday, April 6, 2 pm, at Newtown Congregational Church, UCC, 14 West Street. The Seder will be held in the Great Room, the same level as the sanctuary. There is elevator access if anyone should need it.

It has been ten years since the last Interfaith Council Seder. NIC member Reverend Matthew Crebbin said there seems to be renewed interest in holding another one. Rabbi Schectman from Congregation Adath Israel will lead fellow clergy and guests through traditions and share stories about the Jewish faith and customs. This event will be suitable for all ages and all faiths.

A Seder is a traditional Passover meal that celebrates the Jewish liberation from Egyptian slavery. Families and communities of faith join together to celebrate with wine, storytelling, and special food. Though some food will be shared at this Seder, the focus will be on the stories and foundation of respect and understanding of the Jewish tradition.

Fifty-one attendees joined members of the local clergy for a Sunday afternoon event ten years ago this month. Led by Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel, the March 2015 Seder was also celebrated with Pastor Kathie Adams-Shepherd, Trinity Episcopal Church; Reverend Matthew Crebbin and Reverend Caroline Hamilton-Arnold, Newtown Congregational Church; Reverend Mel Kawakami, Newtown United Methodist Church; Reverend Leo McIlrath, The Lutheran Home in Southbury; Monsignor Robert Weiss, of St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church; and John Woodall, Baha’i Faith.
