Youth Wrestling Team Second In New England Behind Four Champs

The Newtown Youth Wrestling Association competed in the New England Championships at Game On in Fitchburg, Mass. March 15-16. This event includes the top six wrestlers from each state in the region. Newtown had four individual champions, including Joey Cotter who was also given the Peckham Award, which goes to the Outstanding Wrestler, as the team placed second.

Newtown narrowly missing a four-peat at the pinnacle, scoring 77 points, just two behind first-place Danbury. Newtown had 11 total placers, as follows:

Champions: Jane Anderson — 12U girls, 92 pounds; Camron Veneziano — 12U open, 97 pounds (four-time champ); Allen Gaudenzi — 15U open, 100 pounds (two-time champ); Cotter — 15U open, 88 pounds.

Third place: Noah Blair — 15U open, 88 pounds; Jake Fattibene — 15U open, 154 pounds. Fourth place: Ben Weintraub — 12U open, 73 pounds. Fifth place: Matthew Iacuone — 12U open, 69 pounds; Ben Atkas — 10U open, 60 pounds; Hugo Borgerding — 8U open, 66 pounds. Sixth place: Rion Lena — 15U open, 188 pounds.
