‘Waging Change’ Thoughtful Film Screening Planned
The next film in Newtown Congregational Church’s Thoughtful Film series will be the award-winning 2019 documentary Waging Change.
The screening is planned at the church, 14 West Street, on Friday, April 4. An optional sandwich dinner will be served at 5:30. The film viewing and discussion will begin at 6:30 pm.
Featuring Saru Jayaraman, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, Waging Change weaves together the female driven movements that reveal an American workers’ struggle hidden in plain sight: the effort to end the federal tipped minimum wage of $2.13 for restaurant servers and bartenders and the #MeToo movement's efforts to end sexual harassment.
The film shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by restaurant workers trying to feed themselves and their families by intertwining stories of individuals, such as Nataki Rhodes of Chicago, Andrea Velasquez of Detroit and Wardell Harvey of New Orleans with the growing movement to end the tipped minimum wage, spearheaded by One Fair Wage and the Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC-United).
Viewers learn how tips are tracked and what they affect. They are urged to consider an alternative to no taxes: a fair wage.
Directed by Peabody award winner Abby Ginzberg, Waging Change helps consumers see the important role they play in ending the two-tiered wage system.
The 65-minute film was Best Documentary winner at UNAFF 2020 International Documentary Film Festival and Best of Show at Accolade Global Film Competition.
Sign-up for the April 4 event at Newtown Congregational Church is optional but helpful and required by April 3 for those who want a sandwich. Sign up via 734-645-6909 or online at https://rebrand.ly/delgs12.
