Two-Car Head-On Crash Closes South Main Street
A two-car head-on collision on South Main Street about 9:09 pm February 27 resulted in injuries to both drivers, as well as a road closure on the heavily-traveled street.
The accident occurred on the section of South Main Street between its intersections with Mile Hill Road and Elm Drive.
Police said motorist Kerstin Allen, 49, of 45 Sugar Street was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry northward on South Main Street, as motorist Ann Melli, 48, of Trumbull was driving a 2003 Honda CRV southward there. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.
The front end of the Toyota then struck the front end of the Honda, police report. Both vehicles were heavily damaged by the impact.
Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters were called to the scene to clean up spilled automotive fluids, said Hook & Ladder Chief Ray Corbo.
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both drivers to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.
Allen, who was admitted to the hospital as a patient, was listed in good condition midday on March 1, a hospital spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman had no information on Melli.
The section of South Main Street where the accident occurred was closed to traffic for about one hour, Chief Corbo said. Traffic in the area was detoured away from the accident.
The accident is under investigation and enforcement is expected, police said.
