Families United in Newtown (FUN) met at the Reed School on March 8, when it participated in yoga with Sharon Poarch as part of celebrating the Irish March activities around the community.

Over 60 attendees participated in the gathering, which promoted the power of music, yoga, inclusion, and connection. Newtown National Honor Society students mentored the children, teen and adult FUN members.

High Tea and cookies were served after yoga, followed by more dancing.

Families United in Newtown was established in 2008 by Newtown residents Linda and Duane Jones with a dream of providing recreational programs and respite for families with special needs children. Following the tragic death of their son Tyler, the program blossomed with the support of Newtown High School National Honor Society students.

The first FUN gathering was held in October 2010, in memory of Tyler, and since then FUN has hosted regular events. FUN provides an outlet for families with special needs children and also promotes autism awareness.

‘Rockin’ For Autism’

The group’s next event will be its 12th Annual Benefit Concert and Dinner.

“Back to the 90s: Rockin’ for Autism” is scheduled for Saturday, March 29, at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

The evening will commence at 5 pm with guests invited to enjoy a selection of appetizers, setting the stage for an evening of nostalgia and community spirit.

Local performers will take the stage starting at 6, delivering an array of hits from the 90s they hope will get everyone reminiscing and dancing. The concert will feature a mix of genres, showcasing the diverse musical landscape of the decade.

After the concert, guests will then be treated to an amazing dinner and a selection of desserts, providing an opportunity to relax, socialize, and reflect on the impactful work of Families United in Newtown.

Tickets are $45 adults, $25 students, and available at bit.ly/ROCKINFORAUTISM
