Waterbury Symphony Orchestra's “The Jazz Age,” performed last weekend at Edmond Town Hall, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the publication of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the novel that coined the term “Jazz Age” to describe the exuberant, rebellious spirit of the 1920s.

Sunday afternoon’s program featured songs all written in that decade, ranging from the opener of “Jalousie” and continuing with “Sweet Georgia Brown,” to the finale of “Rhapsody in Blue” approximately 80 minutes later.

WSO Music Director and Conductor Leif Bjaland was joined by 15 musicians for the performance. Musicians represented the orchestra’s banjo, bass, drums, piano, reeds, trombone, trumpet, and violin sections.

The performance also featured international soloist Stephanie Harrison, who joined the musicians for nine of the 18 songs performed. Harrison was on stage for selections including “I Want To Be Loved By You,” “Button Up Your Overcoat,” “Someone To Watch Over Me,” and “Blue Skies,” among others. Harrison was dressed for the event, wearing a dusty rose flapper style dress and a bejeweled headband with feather accents.

Guests nearly filled the 500-seat Edmond Town Hall Theatre to capacity for the performance.

The WSO Edmond Town Hall 2024-25 Series will conclude on Sunday, April 27, with “Strings Attached.” World renown violinist Marissa Regni will join WSO performers, including Concertmaster Alyce Cognetta Bertz, for that performance. Tickets are $45, general admission, and available at waterburysymphony.org.
