The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) is offering a one-day workshop, “Learning from Clouds” with Jill Nichols, on Saturday, March 8, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The workshop will be conducted in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

In the one-day workshop, Nichols will give clouds their due, leading students in studying and creating cloud structures with the use of subtle values and colors.

Nichols will demonstrate in oils and watercolors, to be followed by one-on-one instruction while students create their own cloud studies. This workshop is suitable for all levels and mediums.

Cost is $105 ($85 for SCAN members). Class size is limited and registration is required by March 6; visit scanart.org/education.

Nichols’ painting explores both the earthbound and outer expanses of the divine cosmos. Her sense of color and composition has developed over the course of 30+ years as a commercial artist.

She earned her undergraduate degree at University of Colorado, Boulder. In 2000, she set her focus on painting, at first training at the Art Students League in NYC. In 2015 she earned her MFA in painting at Western Connecticut State University.

Her commissioned painting of Washington D.C. appeared as a backdrop for James Comey’s interview on “Face the Nation,” while another made its appearance on Showtime’s “The Comey Rule” mini-series.

Her monumental artwork “Phi,” an 8- by 3-foot painting on copper celebrating the divine feminine, was a part of the “Nasty Woman” art social movement in New Haven. It is now installed in The Vatican Observatory Museum.
