Newtown High School's dance team won the State Championship in the Large Jazz Division at Hamden High on February 22.

The Nighthawks scored 265.7 points to win the title after a runner-up finish in the South-West Conference Championship.

NHS took third in the Pom Competition with a score of 259.1. Hamden was first with a 271.7 and Wethersfield took second with a score of 260.4.

There were eight Jazz teams and ten Pom team competitors.

Both of Newtown's routines qualified for the Regional competition at Trumbull High on March 15.

"We are so proud of this team. Each dancer worked extremely hard to achieve the collective team's goal. Every performance got better and better and we can't wait to watch them perform both of these routines again at Regionals," Newtown Coach Emily Marks said.

Senior captains are Allie Kinsey, Ashley Schrader, Ava Warner, and Devyn Reilly. The other seniors are Lillian Ciaco, Lindsay Myer, and Sienna Guaragno. Juniors are Alexa Schmid, Aquinnah Schmidt, Kathryn Kavovit, Kayla Sinapi, Lila Spencer, Olivia Gulalom, Phoenix Sealey, Piper Adolfson, and Sophia Martinez. Sophomores are Ava Geiger, Astrid Martin, and Gabi Weiss. Freshmen are Ava Jackson, Kailyn Lahey, Sophia Lasaro, and Fiona Shaw.
