Finding The Right Pace

I had a very nice update last week on the conservation activities in Newtown from Pat Barkman, a member of the Newtown Conservation Commission and passionate environmentalist.

The commission and its members have the difficult job of leading the residents of Newtown toward an environment which is more respectful of Mother Nature and protects our environment for future generations. I was particularly impressed by Pat’s knowledge of the issues and, of course, her passion for her work.

We spoke about how to lead the residents toward her goals without getting too far out in front of the voters. How does one stay committed to what you understand to be the right direction while waiting for other to catch up with support for your objectives? The key to success for all leaders may lie in establishing the right pace and picking the right battles to fight. We all owe those involved in conservation, especially the Conservation Commission and the Inland Wetlands Commission, a vote of confidence and our support. Let’s also hope they understand that their passion may not be shared by all, and they will have to lead us carefully, cautiously, patiently, and thoughtfully toward their goals or we’ll fall far behind and out of sight.
