Wrestling Team Heads Into Postseason
Newtown High School’s wrestling team ended the regular season on a winning note, following up losses to Xavier of Middletown and host New Milford in a tri-meet on February 7 with a victory over New Fairfield at home on February 11.
Xavier and New Milford Tri-Meet: Newtown wrestled two of the toughest teams in the state. The Nighthawks battled hard, but came up short 46-26 to Xavier (ranked No. 2) and lost 39-33 to South-West Conference rival New Milford (ranked No. 7). Newtown was down four starters due to the flu and injuries, but still won big matches against top-ranked wrestlers. Ty Jorgenson, Kenna Gioffre, Antonio Arguello, Jake Maddox, and Marc Maurath all went undefeated in the competition. As all three teams are in the Class L State division, Newtown will have a chance to avenge these tight team losses in the postseason.
New Fairfield Dual: Newtown wrapped up the regular season with a final home dual against SWC foe New Fairfield with a dominating 57-16 victory. The Nighthawks won 10 of 14 weight classes and recorded six pins: Gioffre, Arguello, Maddox, Maurath, Charlie Dunn, and Brayden Ayles.
Post Season Preparation: Now that the dual meet portion of the 2024-25 season is finished, Newtown set its sights on winning the SWC tournament which is being hosted by New Fairfield on Saturday, February 15. After the SWC tournament, the Nighthawks will be focused on state and regional tournaments, including:
*Class L Championships: Last year the team placed second among 24 teams with three individual champions and ten place winners.
*State Open Championships: Unlike many other high school sports that finish with their divisional states, wrestling qualifies the best six wrestlers from each weight class from the Class S, M, L and LL schools for a two-day tournament to determine the overall state championship team and crown individual state champions in all 14 weight classes. Last year, the team placed second out of 97 teams with three champions and five place winners.
*New England Championships: And finally, the top five wrestlers from each weight class at the Open travel to Providence, R.I. to determine the best in the region. Last year, the team placed fourth out of 190 teams from six states with a trio of place winners.
