Snapshot: Dawne Killing-Kornhaas
Nicknames: I did have one a while back — Sunrise Slaughter, because of “dawn” and “killing,” so they put that together. It was kind of a funny thing.
Family: My mom is still here in town — she and my dad both went to Newtown High School; my husband Matt, our 28-year-old son Matthew, 25-year-old son Daniel, and 20-year-old daughter Erin.
Pets: We have three dogs.
How did you meet your husband? We were both students at WestConn, art students.
How long have you lived in Newtown? I’ve been here 23 years with my husband and family, but I was conceived, born, and raised here too. I lived in Bethel for a short time but as I said, I was born and raised here. My grandparents used to live in the double house next to the old police station.
What do you do for work and how do you describe your occupation? I work at two different places. The first is MJ Kickboxing and Fitness in Danbury. I work there twice a week as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. I’m also the aquatics administrative assistant and a water aerobics instructor at Newtown Community Center.
What did you want to be when you grew up? A veterinarian.
Are you a member of any clubs, organizations and/or communities of faith? I’m part of Grace Family Church, a nonsecular Christian church in Hawleyville.
If you could spend the day with one person, living or deceased, who would you choose and why? My brother. He passed away 30 years ago this year. One more day with him would be nice.
What is your proudest accomplishment? Always my kids, but I am also training for a marathon. I’m an avid exerciser: I run, I swim, and I lift weights.
What is your favorite music genre? I love music! People will tell you — I am the go-to person for music. I can name an artist, or a band, just like that. Mostly I like hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock, classic rock — mostly things in the rock genre.
Favorite musical performers? Too many to name, but my bucket list band is AC/DC. I’d like to go see Goo Goo Dolls, but there’s just too many to name. There are just so many I like.
What was the most recent concert you went to? It’s been years — I’d love to go to more but they’ve gotten so expensive — but Mötley Crüe and then Cheap Trick.
Favorite food? Definitely chicken Parmesan. I’ve also been known to have a sweet tooth. I love my ice cream.
Favorite color? Pink
What is something you cannot live without? Coffee. I cannot live without coffee in the morning. Even if the power goes out, I will find a way to get my coffee.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? I’ve always loved our landscape. It’s such a beautiful town landscape-wise. And it’s big. All these back roads, it’s just a vast town. I love taking my daughter for rides and pointing out places where I’ve done things.
What is something you’d like to see The Newtown Bee cover, or cover more in depth? I’d love to see focus on more original Newtown things. Like The Way We Were, but with more articles about former businesses, former hangouts, things like that. Maybe stories about places like the old Texaco station, The White Birch, The Yankee Drover.
Do you have a personal credo? I try to live by the fruit of the spirit, which is Galatians 5:22-25: love, patience, kindness, joy, peace and understanding.
