Snowplow Hits Car

Newtown Police report Stephen Clark, 31, of Newtown, operating a 2010 Ford F350, was backing in a parking lot on Pecks Lane, while plowing snow at 6:42 am January 11. Marissa Diiulio, 23, of Oxford, operating a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, was in the same lot. The corner of the snow plow connected with Diiulio’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Allan Griganti, 91, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Hyundai Accent, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 1:35 pm January 15. She was traveling behind a 2011 Chrysler 200 Touring operated by Karen Treichler, 81, of Newtown. Treichler stopped at a red light and Briganti did not stop in time, rear-ending Treichler’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Briganti was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Claims Avoided Bicyclist

Newtown Police report Malik Veech, 28, of Bridgeport, operating a 2021 Toyota Camry, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road at 8:40 pm January 17. While underneath the train bridge he observed a bicyclist in his lane in an unlit dark area and swerved to avoid striking the bicyclist. Veech oversteered and struck the hill along the curve just past the train bridge.

The officer reported that no bicyclist was on scene nor were there any phone calls from a bicyclist who may have observed the collision.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

Hit Car Leaving Driveway

Newtown Police report Jeffery Durkin, 36, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Chevrolet Traverse, was leaving a driveway on Sanford Road at 4:17 pm January 20. David Lerow, 51, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Toyota Rav4, was traveling westbound on Sanford Road. Durkin’s vehicle struck Lerow’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Durkin was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Left Roadway On Curve

Newtown Police report Anthony La Pointe, 25, of Brookfield, operating a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling northbound on Obtuse Road at 9:01 pm January 20. La Pointe’s vehicle left the roadway while negotiating a curve.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

La Pointe was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive right on a curve.

Incident At Commuter Lot

Newtown Police report Brant Canafe, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2008 Honda Accord, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way at 7:44 am January 22. Elisa Headford, 53, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2025 Subaru Legacy, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way. Canafe took a left turn into the entrance of the Interstate 84 Exit 11 commuter parking lot in front of Headford’s vehicle, which struck Canafe’s vehicle.

Headford was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. Headford’s vehicle was towed.

Canafe was issued an infraction for failure to yield right of way to an oncoming vehicle while making a left turn.

One Injured In Collision

Newtown Police report Elizabeth Carvill, 31, of Bethlehem, operating a 2022 Ford F250, was traveling northbound on Flat Swamp Road at 8:58 pm January 22. While negotiating a right-hand curve, Carvill’s vehicle left the roadway and struck some dead trees.

Carvill was transported to Danbury Hospital for minor injuries. The vehicle was towed.

Carvill was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Faith Murray, 19, of Southbury, operating a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, was exiting a parking spot in a lot on Church Hill Road at 2:20 pm January 23. Madeleine Burt, 23, of Bethel, operating a 2024 Subaru Legacy, was parked in a spot in the same lot. Murray’s vehicle struck Burt’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police report the department received a call for a health and welfare check for an unresponsive individual in a running car at 8:32 am January 24. Officers responded and arrested Emily Blewetti, 37, of Newtown, on the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was released on a $100 bond with a court date of February 11 in Danbury Superior Court.

Rolled Forward

Newtown Police report Paola Pena, 34, of Bridgeport, operating a 2015 Nissan Versa, was traveling northbound on Key Rock Road at 2:57 pm January 24. He was traveling behind a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E 450 operated by Paul Izzo, 73, of Newtown. Izzo stopped at the stop sign at Sugar Street and Pena stopped behind. Pena rolled forward and struck the rear of Izzo’s vehicle.

Izzo reported a minor injury but declined transport. Neither vehicle was towed.

Pena was issued an infraction for following too close.

Collision Entering Traffic

Newtown Police report James Good, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Toyota Prius, was traveling northbound on Elm Drive at 3:27 pm January 24. Julie McTague, 50, of Redding, operating a 2024 Volvo Xc60, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street. An uninvolved vehicle traveling on Sugar Street stopped west of Elm Drive to allow Good to enter into the Sugar Street eastbound traffic lane. Good entered the eastbound travel lane and struck the rear of McTague’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Good was issued a written waring for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Both Vehicles Towed

Newtown Police report Simone Marong, 35, of Bethany, operating a 2014 Dodge Charger, was leaving a driveway on Washington Avenue at 9:40 pm January 24. Barbara Santa, 36, of Bethel, operating a 2012 Toyota Prius, was traveling southbound on Washington Avenue. Marong’s vehicle struck Santa’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Marong was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a private driveway.

Hit Guidewire

Newtown Police report Thomas Benedetto, 85, of Newtown, operating a 2021 BMW Z4, was traveling northbound on Brushy Hill Road at 3:26 pm January 25. His vehicle crossed the centerline and traveled off the left-hand side of the roadway, driving on grass before re-entering the roadway and across the centerline. The vehicle then left the right-hand side of the roadway where it traveled between a utility pole and its guidewire before striking the guidewire and spinning to a halt.

Beneditto was examined on scene for possible minor injuries but refused transport. The vehicle was towed.

Beneditto was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

A Newtown Police Department officer walks toward a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck after it had been struck by the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox on the right, around 12:30 pm Tuesday, January 28. According to the Newtown PD report, Terrance W. Haase, 71, of Danbury, was operating the truck southbound on Main Street, approaching the flagpole, when the Equinox entered the same intersection. Ana R. Zdonczyk, 61, also of Danbury, was operating the Equinox westbound, from Church Hill Road, with the intent to cross Main Street to West Street. The front of the Equinox struck the driver’s side of the S-10, causing the truck to spin around. The truck came to rest in the courtyard of Newtown Meeting House, facing east. Zdonczyk told police she was following her GPA and was unsure what happened. She was given an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign. Newtown Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene. Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue was dispatched when it appeared one patient would need extrication, but that company was canceled en route. Haase and Zdonczyk were both transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries. —Bee Photo, Hicks
