Mary Ann Dwight
SOUTHBURY – Mary Ann Dwight (our beloved “Mimi”) passed away surrounded by family on January 2, 2025, at Waterbury Hospital following a brief illness.
Mary Ann was born Mary Ann Joyce Carnright on October 24, 1935, in Cornwall, N.Y., the daughter of the late Jason and Frances Carnright. The third youngest of eleven children, she spent her childhood years in Newburgh, N.Y., growing up in a devout and loving household alongside her brothers and sisters.
Mary Ann met her husband-to-be, John (“Jack”) Dwight, when they were just in eighth grade. They fell deeply in love, were married in 1953 at ages 17 and 18, respectively, and remained devoted husband and wife for 61 wonderful years until Jack’s passing in 2014. They raised three children, Lynne Ann, John (“Jackie”) Jr and Jeffrey.
Over the years, Mary Ann and Jack relocated several times in support of Jack’s successful career, living in Willingboro, N.J.; Chelmsford, Mass.; Newtown; North Andover, Mass.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Newtown (again); and Old Bridge, N.J. They moved to Estero, Fla., upon retirement. After Jack’s passing, Mary Ann moved back to Southwest Connecticut, the area they had most considered home. She resided happily for the last ten years in Southbury near her son Jeffrey and his family.
As Mary Ann and Jack raised their young family, Mary Ann worked several part-time jobs to help with expenses, but her full-time job and her greatest passion was raising her three children and supporting her husband. She was an extraordinary nurturer, a gift to her family that grew as her family grew. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, and they adored their “Mimi.” She remained their biggest fan and loved being involved in their many school and extra-curricular activities. The amount of love she gave us all never wavered.
It wasn’t only her family that benefitted from her love. She also dedicated her life to helping others. Over the years, she volunteered herself to causes like the soup kitchen, meals-on-wheels, helping at nursing homes, contributing to Saint Vincent DePaul, and many, many other activities to the benefit of those in need.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her daughter Lynne, her grandson John, and her brothers and sisters Jason, Virginia, Gaynell, Dorothy, Richard, Carol, Joseph, and Leonard.
She is survived by her sisters Frances and Joyce; her daughter Lynne’s husband Kevin, grandchildren Kevin Jr, David and Ellen, and great grandchildren Grace, Noah and Jackson; her son Jackie and his wife Carla, grandchildren Elizabeth and Natalie, and great granddaughter Kenzlie; and her son Jeffrey and his wife Christine, and grandchildren Abigail and Olivia.
A memorial service for Mary Ann will be held on Saturday, January 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 910 Main Street South in Southbury. A visitation with the family will begin at 9 am until Mass begins at 10 am.
In keeping with Mary Ann’s lifelong wish to help others before herself, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Saint Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, St Jude Children’s Hospital, or Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer, 415 Crossways Park Drive-Suite D, Woodbury NY 11787.
