David Ogdon
David Hekma Ogdon, 68, of Newtown, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2024, at his home.
Born in Northampton, Mass., he is the son of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Hekma) Ogdon.
David previously worked for his grandfather at Hekma Advanced Machine, then later Scott Paper in Maine. He then worked for many years logging throughout the Northeast. David also ran a successful firewood business and dedicated many years to it.
David had a passion for physical challenges, and at just 15 years old, he won both the “16 and under” golf and tennis tournaments at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich. He was a true adventurer, with a passion for cycling that took him on journeys up and down the East Coast. His love for nature ran deep, whether he was hiking scenic trails, exploring castles and monuments, or sharing joyful moments at the park or zoo with his grandkids. He also enjoyed the excitement of sledding and winter sports as well as fairs and amusement parks. In addition, David was a master pool and ping pong player and could often be found competing against friends and strangers alike throughout the Newtown/Danbury area. Whether it was building a fire on the ice during the coldest winter days or soaking up the warmth of the sun at the beach, he cherished every moment spent with those he cared for. We will miss the long phone calls where he loved to tell stories and share a laugh, when his warmth and wisdom shone through.
David had a deep appreciation for all things beautiful — including his mother’s artwork and sculptures. His collections of stamps, coins, quartz, and paperweights are things we will always hold dear to us. His vibrant spirit, infectious energy, and zest for life will be profoundly missed, forever cherished, and never forgotten.
Surviving are his daughters, Carol Barbieri and her husband James of Berlin and Julie Horensky-Bouwman of North Carolina; a brother, William Barry Ogdon of Bethel; two half-sisters, Amber Purpura of Illinois and Kristin Ogdon of Manhattan; an aunt, Jacqueline Stone of Greenwich; a niece, Eve Ogdon of Boston; and three grandchildren, Aria and Jameson Barbieri and Brooke Horensky.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 11, 4 to 7 pm, at Carlson Funeral Home in New Britain. Graveside services will be held at a later date to be announced.
