The Board of Education voted for its new slate of officers at its meeting on Tuesday, December 1.

Democrat Rebekah Harriman-Stites and Republican Andrew Clure were elected to the board at the start of last month, while Democrat John Vouros was reelected.

After Debbie Leidlein nominated Keith Alexander to continue as the board’s chair, she said, “I think [Mr Alexander] has done a wonderful job of leading us over the past year and a half, and I appreciate everything he has done for the board.”

Mr Leidlein continued saying Mr Alexander “makes good solid decisions” and works well with other leaders in town.

Michelle Ku, who was later unanimously voted to be the board’s new vice chair, said Mr Alexander brings out the board members’ individual strengths.

“I really appreciate that,” said Ms Ku.

Before he was unanimously voted to continue as chair, Ms Alexander said his interest in being chair is to make sure “we are thoughtful in our process and I appreciate the way everyone has worked together on the board. I’d like to promote that as much as possible and communicate effectively.”

Ms Leidlein then nominated Ms Ku as the board’s vice chair, saying, “I think [Ms Ku] demonstrated through her work that she is committed to this board and she has worked tirelessly on several committees in order to move the board forward. I appreciate everything that she has done so far on the board.”

Both John Vouros and Ms Leidlein were nominated to be the board’s new secretary.

Ms Harriman-Stites, who nominated Mr Vouros, said he is committed and passionate leader who puts children first.

Mr Alexander said Ms Leidlein is conscientious and diligent. He also said Ms Leidlein has experience, including serving as the board’s secretary, vice chair, and chair in the past.

The school board voted 4 to 3 to name Ms Leidlein its new secretary, with Mr Alexander, Ms Leidlein, Kathy Hamilton, and Ms Ku voting for the motion.
