A local resident died Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Church Hill Road.
Police, fire and ambulance personnel were all dispatched to the area of Church Hill Road near Dayton Street around 6:15 pm for the reported incident.
Newtown Police issued a statement saying officers on scene "determined that a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road and struck a pedestrian who was crossing Church Hill Road towards the westbound shoulder."
The road was immediately closed to all traffic between its intersections with Walnut Tree Hill Road and Sandy Hook Center.
Pete Blomberg, a longtime resident and the assistant chief of Botsford Fire Rescue, was transported to Danbury Hospital but did not survive his injuries. Blomberg, 72, was heading to the annual Newtown Board of Fire Commissioners dinner, planned at a nearby restaurant, when he was killed.
Newtown Police said Tuesday morning that the driver of the truck remained on the scene and has been cooperative with the investigation. The name of the driver has not been released. Newtown Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team, Detective Bureau and Drone Unit were all on the scene to assist with the investigation.
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic, and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded.
Botsford Fire Rescue issued a brief statement on its Facebook page late Monday night, asking "for your thoughts and prayers and appreciate the outpouring of support thus far.
"We offer both our sincerest condolences and gratitude to the Blomberg family in this tragic time," the post also noted.
Newtown Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Detective Chelsea Harold at 203-426-5841.
This is a developing story. Additional details will be reported as they are released.
