Kwarcinski Sets Pool Record Nighthawk Swimmers Post Victories
Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season in winning — and record-setting — style as the Nighthawks defeated visiting New Fairfield behind Alexa Kwarcinski’s pool record mark of 2:12.00 in the 200 yard individual medley race on October 18 then defeated Masuk of Monroe on Senior Night on October 22. Kwarcinski reset a record that had stood since 1998 when Patricia Finnerty recorded a time of 2:12.32.
The Nighthawks defeated New Fairfield 93-76 but had the win wrapped up after the 500 freestyle race with a 93-32 lead and exhibitioned the last four events.
Newtown’s 200 medley relay of Emily Metzker, Kwarcinski, Lillian Accettella, and Kaila Sullivan was first in 2:05.98. Accettella won the 50 free in 27.55.
In the diving competition Shannon O’Donnell was first with a score of 169.1.
Maddie Marcisz won the 100 butterfly race in a time of 1:06.63. Sierra Marx took first in the 100 free in 59.84. Angela Wennerholm won the 500 making her final touch in 6:00.03.
The 200 free relay of Marcisz, Metzker, Marx, and Wennerholm had the fastest time with a 1:54.57. Petertonjes led the way in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.50. Kwarcinski finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.35.
The 400 free relay comprising Petertonjes, Bridget Gioffe, Accettella, and Kwarcinski completed the race in 4:09.60.
Newtown defeated Masuk 99-85, exhibitioning only the final event before honoring the seniors.
Metzker, Kwarcinski, Accettella, and Wennerholm won the 200 medley relay in 2:01.83.
Petertonjes was first in the 200 free in 1:59.33. Accettella won the 200 IM in 2:25.69. Kwarcinski was first in the 50 sprinting to the finish in 24.90.
Masuk had the top three diving scores but Newtown’s Grace Kase had a personal best score of 153.85. O’Donnell, who had bounced back from a preseason injury to compete in the second half of the campaign, had a score of 171.2, and Aliyah Reuther recorded a 169.45.
Petertonjes was the fastest to the finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.07. Accettella won the 100 in 59.10. Wennerholm took the top spot in the 500 clocking in at 6:01.20.
The 200 free relay of Accettella, Indigo Land, Marx, and Marcisz was first in 1:52.56. Metzker had Newtown’s best time in the 100 backstroke event and placed second in 1:10.18. Kwarcinski won the 100 breaststroke race in 1:07.62, just off the pool record of 1:07.60.
The 400 free relay of Wennerholm, Metzker, Petertonjes, and Kwarcinski was first in 4:06.53.
Newtown will compete in the South-West Conference Championships with the diving competition at New Fairfield High Wednesday, October 30 at 5:30 pm and the swim events at Masuk’s pool Saturday, November 2; the swim portion of the championships has been bumped up to an early start time of 1 pm.
