Championship Game Next! Field Hockey Team Wins Semifinal
Newtown High School's field hockey team avenged a regular-season setback to Immaculate of Danbury with a 4-3 win over the Mustangs in the October 24 South-West Conference Tournament semifinals.
The No. 3 Nighthawks edged No. 2 Immaculate at neutral site New Milford High. Newtown now will have a chance to get some redemption against No. 1 New Milford, a team the Hawks lost to 1-0 during the regular slate, when the schools meet in the the Sunday, October 27, championship game at Western Connecticut State University at 6 pm.
In the win over Immaculate Abby Ihlefeld and Rachael Albrecht scored unassisted goals in the first quarter with Ihlefeld's coming off a penalty corner. Ellenoire Schoen was assisted by Emily O'Neil in the third and Schoen scored again in the fourth, set up by Ihlefeld and Mo Murphy, off a corner in the fourth.
O'Neil also had a great defensive save to help the Nighthawks advance.
Newtown got by No. 6 New Fairfield 1-0 in the quarterfinals. New Milford got by No. 8 Weston and No. 4 Joel Barlow of Redding to reach the pinnacle contest.
