Volleyball Team Advances To Championship Match

The No. 2 seed Newtown High School girls' volleyball team defeated No. 3 Masuk of Monroe 3-1 in the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals in Newtown on October 24.

With the win the Nighthawks will compete in the championship at neutral site Western Connecticut State University in Danbury on Tuesday, October 29 at 6 pm. The Hawks will take on No. 1 Joel Barlow of Redding, a winner over No. 4 Weston.

Newtown, which lost to Masuk in a five-setter during the regular season, prevailed in four games of their playoff matchup with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 27-25, and 25-21.

Gianna Galassi had 19 kills, an ace, a block, and eight digs; Emily Daoust compiled 16 digs; Addy Cordova had two aces and nine digs; Sara Heinen logged nine kills; Sarah Hubner had three aces and five digs; Ava Lombardo registered three aces, two kills, five blocks, and 49 assists; Allie Nowacki logged an ace, six kills, three blocks, and two digs; Lauren Murphy had seven kills; and Cassie Pickering had an ace, five kills, and three blocks.
