Newtown Lions Club is planning its 2nd Annual Model Train Show Event to benefit Childhood Cancer Research. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 10 am-2:30 pm, at Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street.

The event will feature several different operating model railroads encompassing over 1,700 square feet. It will again include the presentation of The Pizza Box Railroad, constructed again this year by Newtown Lions Club member Lion Paul Arneth.

Admission is $10, $5 ages 7-12, free age 6 and under, with a $25/family maximum.

For the serious and occasional hobbyist there will also be several vendors selling model railroad equipment, accessories and books on Do-it-Yourself modeling (DIY) and much more. There will also be door prizes, food trucks, videos and slide presentations on historic area railroads throughout the day.

The show will additionally offer attractions for the young at heart with Dr Cadabra’s Magic and a hands-on for kids to experience railroad models by American Flyer.

“Childhood cancer is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences a family can endure,” he said. “The Newtown Lions Club is actively supplying resources to support research for childhood cancer as one of the five major charitable causes the Lions serve.”

According to National Cancer Institute (NCI), in the United States last year, an estimated 9,910 new cases of cancer were diagnosed among children from birth to 14 years, and about 1,040 children are expected to die from the disease. The estimated new cancer cases among adolescents and young adults (AYA) ages 15-39 in the US in 2023 will be greater than 85,000. This amounts to approximately 4.4% of all new cancer cases at any age.

Although cancer death rates for those up to age 14 have declined by 70 percent from 1970 through 2020, cancer remains the leading cause of death from disease among children, also according to NCI. The most common types of cancer diagnosed in children ages 0-14 years are leukemias, brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors, and lymphomas.

Newtown Lions Club hopes this year’s show will again be a success, and another opportunity for The Lions Club Foundation to serve those in new.

Newtown Lions Club is a volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. All net proceeds from the train show are earmarked for childhood cancer research.
