Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team, fresh off a week-and-a-half break between meets, put together some impressive times in a 100-84 loss to tough South-West Conference challenger Weston on October 15.

Zoe Petertonjes (200 yard freestyle), Lillian Accettella (100 butterfly), and Alexa Kwarcinski (100 breaststroke) all recorded season-best times.

“Overall, we are set up really well for our last two meets and heading into the postseason,” said Newtown Coach Lisa Irving, whose Nighthawks will wrap up the regular slate with a pair of home meets: Friday, October 18 versus New Fairfield at 4 pm and Tuesday, October 22 when Masuk of Monroe comes to town at 6 pm. Then it is on to the postseason.

In the Weston meet the 200 yard medley relay team of Emily Metzker, Audrey McLean, Maddie Marcisz, and Accettella came in third in a time of 2:14.79, narrowly out-touched by Weston’s second-place relay (2:14.39).

Petertonjes won the 200 free in 1:59.46, a solid 15 seconds ahead of Weston’s second-place finisher. Accettella placed second in the 50 free in 27.68.

Shannon O’Donnell took second in the diving competition with a score of 156.5.

Petertonjes won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.43; Accettella was runner-up in the race in 1:05.83. Sierra Marx took third in the 100 free clocking in at 1:00.00. Angela Wennerholm placed third in the 500, making her final touch in 6:06.71.

The 200 free relay of Kwarcinski, Indigo Land, Marcisz, and Petertonjes was first in 1:46.33, about a second faster than Weston’s second-place relay team.

Marx won the backstroke event in 1:08.36, Kwarcinski pulled away to take first in the 100 breaststroke race in 1:08.55, eight seconds ahead of Weston’s top swimmer.

In the 400 free relay Accettella, Marx, Wennerholm, and Petertonjes earned second in 4:00.81.
