Girls’ Swim Team Races Past Bunnell And Stratford

Newtown High School’s girls’ swim team defeated host Bunnell of Stratford 99-56 on September 27 and topped host Stratford 90-67 on October 1. In the Bunnell meet the Nighthawks had the top two finishers in every event, sealed the team win following the 200 yard freestyle relay race, and exhibitioned the final three competitions of the night. Against Stratford the Hawks piled up the first-place results and exhibitioned the last two races.

“The past two meets we focused on achieving personal best times as well as challenging the girls to swim some events they don’t usually compete in. As a team they have really started to show a lot of depth and versatility,” Newtown Coach Lisa Irving said.

Bunnell meet results are as follows:

The 200 yard medley relay team of Sierra Marx, Indigo Land, Zoe Petertonjes, and Lillian Accettella was first in 2:05.85. The relay contingent of Bridget Gioffe, Emily Metzker, Maddie Marcisz, and Angela Wennerholm was second in 2:17.50.

In the 200 freestyle event Alexa Kwarcinski was first in 2:06.10 and Emma Sheehan second in 2:24.88. Petertonjes won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.33, Accettella was runner-up in 2:28.72. Marx and Wennerholm went one-two in the 50 free with times of 27.71 and 29.87.

Kwarcinski won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.32 and Marcisz came in second in 1:05.07. Accettella won the 100 free in a time of 1:02.22 and Land came in second in the 100, clocking in at 1:05.07. In the 500 first-place finisher Petertonjes made her final touch in 5:26.52 and Wennerholm came in second in 5:59.02.

In the 200 free relay Marcisz, Emma Sheehan, Land, and Kwarcinski completed the race in 1:55.30. Ella Viau, Marcela Corral, Jolene Brackett, and Audrey McLean came in second in 2:09.93. Marx won the 100 backstroke race in 1:08.55 and Metzker came in second in 1:14.75. Marcisz was the fastest finisher in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:20.20, followed by McLean in 1:29.37.

The top team in the 400 free relay included Wennerholm, Sheehan, Marx, and Kwarcinski with a time of 4:07.59. The 400 relay of Metzker, Gioffe, Accettella, and Petertonjes came in next with a time of 4:10.71.

Stratford meet results:

The 200 medley relay of Marx, Marcisz, Petertonjes, and Metzker was first in 2:04.37. Kwarcinski won the 200 free in 2:02.33. Accettella was first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:25.84. Petertonjes won the 50 in 26.16. Kwarcinski was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.55. Marx won the 100 free in 59.54. Accettella was Newtown’s top finisher in the 500, placing second in 5:47.78.

Newtown had the top two 200 free relays. Kwarcinski, Land, Accettella, and Petertonjes won the race in 1:50.07; and Metzker, Gioffe, Wennerholm, and Marcisz came in second in 2:00.43.

Marx was second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.81. Petertonjes and Marcisz had the two fastest times in the 100 breaststroke recording a 1:18.49 and 1:18.65.

In the 400 relay the second-fastest time went to Newtown’s Marx, McLean, Kaila Sullivan, and Accettella who finished in 4:20.55, just ahead of teammates Wennerholm, Gioffe, Sheehan, and Kwarcinski with a time of 4:20.93.
