Michelle Ku: An Advocate From The Inside

To the Editor:

Newtown is ready for a fresh start in the 106th District, and Michelle Ku is the right person to replace Mitch Bolinsky this November.

2012. That’s how long it’s been since Mitch was first elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives. That’s a long time. Thank you, Mitch.

But let’s now take the opportunity to refresh Newtown’s representation by electing Michelle Ku, who will actively shape policy and engage in crucial discussions “in the room where it happens” within the Democrats’ large majority in the state legislature, rather than from the Republicans’ minority view from outside looking in. Fighting for Newtown’s interests from within the majority is simply more effective and practical.

For as long as Mitch has been in the General Assembly, Michelle has been taking on leadership positions here in Newtown. She’s been serving our town continuously since joining the Charter Revision Committee in 2012, the Board of Education from 2013-2021, the Legislative Council from 2021-2023, and now as a member of the Board of Selectmen. Her extensive experience gives her a deep understanding of what Newtown’s residents truly need from their State Representatives.

Michelle shares some of Mitch’s key commitments, including always providing an open ear to our seniors and veterans. But to be clear, Michelle is not the same as Mitch. Michelle distinguishes herself across many issues detailed in recent letters to The Bee. Notably, Michelle will continue to be a strong voice for reasonable gun safety measures, and she supports women’s rights to determine their own reproductive health — two key issues aligned with the values of most Newtowners.

Both candidates offer dedication, but we deserve fresh representation to provide an effective and impactful voice for Newtown. Michelle Ku is that voice.
