On September 7, “Newtown Hope on Main Street,” formerly known as “Newtown Relay for Life,” presented its Fifth Annual Hope on Main Street event. The event was held in the courtyard of the C.H. Booth Library. It rained heavily for most of the program, which gave a somber feel to the remembrance and celebration of life program. Approximately 50 people attended the event. Among them were cancer survivors, their caregivers, community supporters, and local leadership. All were in attendance to show support and care for those who have struggled or are currently struggling with cancer because, quite frankly, cancer sucks, and no one should have to face it alone.

Peter Monaghan played the bagpipes — adding a poignant quality to the ceremony. Other local musicians played uplifting music to help celebrate the lives of those lost and to provide a bright moment to those currently dealing with cancer. Mary Salley, a cancer survivor, spoke about her experiences with cancer and First Selectman, Jeff Capeci, addressed the guests, as well.
