Babe Ruth 10s Post 3-1 Pool Play Record In Cal Ripken World Series
The Newtown Hawks Babe Ruth Baseball team, representing New England, completed pool play in the Cal Ripken 10U World Series in Crown Point, Ind. in early August.
The Hawks beat Mineral Area, Mo. 2-1, Crown Point Ind. White 8-0, and Germany 10-0. Their only loss came in a 1-0 nail-biter against West Raleigh, N.C. Newtown’s starting pitchers Owen Leighton, Austin Luczak, Filipe Costa, and Jackson Christos each earned player of the game honors in the game in which they were the starting pitcher, with the team only surrendering one earned run across the four games. Newtown’s defense has been spectacular and the Hawks are tied for the fewest runs allowed in the whole tournament with two.
The offense has been sparked by Chris Evans, Jacob Christos, Chris Fairbairn, and Austin Luczak — all batting .300 or better and have accounted for 11 runs batted in and nine runs scored.
Newtown qualified to advance out of pool play to bracket play and into single-elimination play as the third-ranked team in the 25-team tournament of regional and national champions.
