Despite the threats of rain, the Friends of Newtown Seniors gathered at Aquila’s Nest Vineyards for its Summer Soiree — an evening of small bites, good friends, and even better music. The event was a success, selling 100 tickets and bringing in a crowd of about 70 people an hour after the start time.

Frank Monette, a member of FONS and part of the committee that helped plan the event, said, “We’re expecting to break even, maybe even make a few bucks,” between the ticket sales and raffle prizes. At the event, raffle tickets were sold for a $150 cash prize, Italian gift basket, and a chance to win a night in a fairy gazebo that fits eight people at Aquila’s Nest Vineyards.

Monette was ecstatic to be at Aquila’s last Tuesday night. He said that FONS loves to support local vendors and businesses. Everyone in attendance agreed with Monette that Aquila’s has “done a really nice job” in maintaining and landscaping the property, as well as cultivating a fun environment for people to relax in.

Bennett-Schaedler said, “People are really excited to be here. There are a lot of first timers [at Aquila’s].” She joined in on the excitement, laughing and joking with those purchasing raffle tickets.

FONS is a group focused on fighting against ageism and connecting seniors in the Newtown community with each other. That initiative is what inspires events like their Summer Soiree.

“We try to involve all ages,” Monette said. “This is the ‘Friends’ of Newtown Seniors.”

And people of all ages did come to the soiree. Some nurses from Danbury Hospital came after being invited by one of their patients, and some grandchildren came to support their grandparents.

John Boccuzzi, the founder of FONS, explained that FONS wants to work with the community. “We want them as a partner … We see ourselves as what we do. We want to work with anyone … If someone wants to do something good for seniors, we’re there.”

FONS’ dedication to the community is clear with Bennett-Schaedler starting the Newtown Rides program. Boccuzzi said, “Bev is just ‘go.’ She wants to do something, and she just does it. Why wait, you know?”
