From Doubles Partners To Roommates: Former NHS Tennis Players Sticking Together In College
On the tennis court, Ella Morits and Margaret Donovan teamed up to form Newtown High School’s top doubles tandem. Senior captains this past spring, they have played their last tennis together as members of the Nighthawks but will be reunited in college this fall.
Not only are Morits and Donovan headed to the same school — Loyola University in Baltimore, Md. — but they will also be roommates. What is interesting is that, despite their friendship and connection on the tennis court, this tandem did not plan to go from doubles partners to roommates.
The girls were looking at different schools and ultimately coincidently ended up both on the same collegiate path. Once it was confirmed both would attend Loyola it seemed logical to be roommates.
“We didn’t expect it,” Donovan said. “We’re really excited.”
“I think it will be really fun,” Morits added.
Donovan and Morits had plenty of fun on the court battling the competition and registering service aces. Now they will look to ace their classes and will perhaps be study partners. While they will not be playing for the Loyola tennis team you can bet there will be some time to hit the courts for a recreational match here and there.
“They’re such good friends — they know each other so well,” Newtown High Coach Maureen Maher said. “They have fun and when you have fun you tend to play better.”
The friendship translated onto the court with strong play during the spring.
“I think they know what each other’s thinking and where to go,” Maher said.
So it is appropriate that they will study psychology.
