Struck While Turning Into Driveway

Newtown Police report on June 11 at 8:46 am, Patrick Murphy of Newtown, 88, operating a 2018 HR-V Lx Honda, was traveling south on Hawleyville Road and turned left into 26 Hawleyville Road while Gary Kellogg Northrop of Southbury, 80, operating a 2017 Nissan Altima, struck the side of Murphy’s vehicle.

Both vehicles were towed, no injuries reported. Murphy was issued a verbal warning for restricted turns.

Colliding Mirrors

Newtown Police report Jon Michael Manno of Brookfield, 48, operating a 2017 Ram Truck 1500 Sport, was travelling southbound on South Main Street behind Alexander Bink of Cropseyville, N.Y., 31, operating a 2016 Toyota Tacoma on June 14, 4:56 am. Manno attempted to pass Bink when the right mirror of his vehicle struck the left mirror of Bink’s vehicle.

Neither vehicle was towed, and no injuries were reported.

Mercedes-Benz Rear-Ends Honda

Newtown Police report on June 16 at 5:03 pm Sandro Pizzicarola of Trumbull, 68, operating a 2005 E320 CDI Mercedes-Benz, was travelling westbound on Mile Hill Road behind Adrianna Bohlander of Easton, 21, operating a 2014 Honda CRV Ex-l. Bohlander was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and South Main Street when Pizzicarola struck the rear of Bohlander’s car. Pizzicarola was issued a misdemeanor for evasion of responsibility in operation of a motor vehicle and a verbal warning for following too close.

No injuries were reported, neither vehicle was towed.

Parked Car Struck In Lot

Newtown Police report on June 21 at 1:17 pm Kathryn Pfeiffer of Newtown, 23, operating a 2015 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring, was exiting a parking spot and struck the driver side door of a 2024 Lexus NX 450H Luxury owned by Toyota Lease Trust, causing significant damage. No one was in the Lexus.

No injuries were reported and neither vehicle was towed. The event happened on private property and no enforcement was authorized.

Driver On Phone Causes Property Damage

Newtown Police report Michael Juan of Bridgeport, 30, operating a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, was travelling northbound on Flat Swamp Road on June 21 at 7:12 pm when he drifted off the road and hit multiple yards of fencing and a large rock before coming to a stop in the brush at 71 Flat Swamp Road. Juan was issued infractions for failure to maintain lane, failure to renew registration, and operating a motor vehicle while manipulating a cellular device in the first offense.

No injuries were reported, and the Jeep Wrangler was towed due to disabling damage.

Vehicle Towed Due To Lack Of Registration

Newtown Police report on June 22 at 12:29 pm Lisa Yu of Newtown, 38, operating a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 LT, was travelling north on Hundred Acres Road when she stopped and backed up to enter the driveway to 24 Hundred Acres Road. As Yu was driving forward to turn left into the driveway, Osman Diaz-Escobar of Norwalk, 23, operating a 2015 Ford F250 Super Duty, made contact with the rear bumper of the Suburban. Diaz-Escobar reported that Yu’s brake lights were not working, but the reporting officer checked and saw the lights were operational. Diaz-Escobar reported that Yu was on her phone, which she denied. Minor damage was reported to both vehicles.

The F250 Super Duty was towed from the scene due to the registration status being cancelled as of May 29, 2020, and a 2023 Belmont trailer was also towed due to suspended registration. Diaz-Escobar could not provide registration for either vehicle and was issued a misdemeanor for illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, operation of an unregistered vehicle, and operation while vehicle registration is suspended.

Hydroplaning On Laurel Trail

Newtown Police report Marilyn Clark, 83, operating a 2008 Toyota Sienna CE/LE on June 23 at 8:02 pm was traveling east on Riverside Road and attempted to take a left turn onto Laurel Trail. Due to the extreme rain and high winds, she hydroplaned on the wet road and made contact with a stone wall off the northeast corner of Riverside Road and Laurel Trail. There was no obvious damage to the wall, and no enforcement was enacted due to the extreme weather conditions.

Clark was transported to Danbury Hospital with complaints of chest pain and the vehicle was towed.

Hit And Run After 360 Degree Turn

Newtown Police report Alexandra Schicker of Sandy Hook, 18, operating a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limit on June 27 at 1:30 pm was stopped at the red light at the intersection of Berkshire Road, Toddy Hill Road, and the entrance to I-84. Schicker intended to turn right onto the I-84 ramp when the vehicle in front of her, a large, boxy, silver SUV, looked in his side view mirror, made eye contact with Schicker, smiled at her, and then made a left hand turn from the right lane. The unknown vehicle continued to turn left, crossing several lanes of traffic until it returned to the westbound, right hand lane of travel behind the Jeep Cherokee. While the unknown vehicle was still in motion from the turn, it made contact with the rear of the Cherokee. There was minimum damage to the car.

The unknown driver turned onto the I84 ramp and Schicker pulled off to a grassy area. The operator of the unknown car did not stop to provide identification. No injuries or enforcement were reported.

Improper Passing Causes Collision

Newtown Police report on June 27 at 8:49 pm Brian Wolanin-Villanueva of Newtown, 37, operating a 2023 BMW X5, and Noah Pecquex of Wilton, 23, operating a 2023 Subaru Forester, were both traveling southbound on Poverty Hollow Road behind a farm tractor. Wolanin-Villanueva attempted to overtake and pass both Pecquex and the tractor on the left. At the same time, Pecquex tried to pass the tractor on the left and struck the front right side of the BMW with the front left side of his car. Wolanin-Villanueva overtook the Forester, which caused more damage to both vehicles before they both came to a stop.

No injuries were reported nor were the vehicles towed. Both operators were issued a verbal warning for improper passing.

Unsafe Backing On Queen Street

Newtown Police report Erik Sporre of Sandy Hook, 49, operating a 2004 Dodge RAM 1500, was traveling southbound on Queen Street on June 28 at 12:07 pm and backed up to go around a stopped vehicle. When he backed up, he struck the front of a 2006 Honda S200 operated by Emily Blewett, 37, of Newtown.

Blewett’s car was towed, no injuries were reported. Sporre was issued an infraction ticket for unsafe backing.

Toyota Hits Tesla

Newtown Police report on June 28 at 3:59 pm that Denise Rodriguez, 65, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Toyota RAV 4, was backing out of a parking space on private property. Stephen Lein, 47, of Monroe, operating a 2023 Tesla Model 3, finished backing out of a space and was in the traffic lane when Rodriguez collided with Lein. Rodriguez said she could not see Lein and claimed fault for the accident. The Tesla sustained a large dent to the left front fender.

No injuries were reported and neither vehicle was towed.

Driving Tired Causes One Car Accident

Newtown Police report Aiden Yee, 16, of Wilton, operating a 2019 Honda Pilot EXL, was traveling southbound on Poverty Hollow Road on June 29 at 3:45 pm when he crossed over the center line and onto the northbound shoulder area. Yee struck both Frontier Communications Pole #631 and a tree. Yee travelled over Belgian blocks on 99 Poverty Hollow Road, which caused heavy and disabling damage to the Honda Pilot. The front left wheel and tire were completely torn off the vehicle, and the tire separated from the wheel. Damage to the front right bumper was also observed, which came from striking the guard wire. Yee reported being very tired at the scene.

The vehicle was towed, and Yee reported minor injuries. He denied transport to the hospital. Yee was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Illegal Operation Of A Motor Vehicle

Newtown Police report Jose Ramos-Cortes, 52, of Waterbury, was arrested on June 28 at 7:37 pm for illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension. He was released on a promise to appear.

Burglary Arrest

Newtown Police report Shawn Warner, 32, of Hartford, was arrested on June 28 at 10:30 am for burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, and larceny in the first degree. His bond was set at $100,000 and his court date set for July 1 in Danbury Superior Court.
