Weekly Column Offers A Fun Way To ‘Meet’ Newtown Neighbors
To the Editor:
Every Friday, I have the opportunity to meet my Newtown neighbors — vicariously — through Snapshots. I admire the individuals who live in our much-appreciated town.
I block out the photo before I read the text and imagine what the person might look like based on their responses. Once I look at their faces, I feel as though I know them.
This past week, the focus on Virginia Zimmermann elicited nostalgia. We are both educators and had a most memorable teacher who inspired and guided us. Mine was my 10th grade English teacher, Jack McDevitt, now a famous science fiction author.
I’m still teaching high school English — starting my 55th year this fall interacting with the best humanity has to offer: teenagers. Even though I will be 77 soon, their enthusiasm, energy, and spontaneity evoke feelings of timelessness. Rather similar to Virginia’s experience, I imagine.
Oh, and turquoise is my favorite color, too!
