Tanker trucks from neighboring towns assisted all five Newtown fire companies in extinguishing a house fire on Greenleaf Farms Road last Friday night.

The flames caused significant damage to the roof.

The house is within Dodgingtown Volunteer Fire Company’s district. Dodgingtown Chief Steve Murphy was in command at the scene.

Botsford, Hawleyville, Newtown Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue all responded, as did crews from Bethel, Redding, and other surrounding areas.

Firefighters arrived to the single-family home on 17 Greenleaf Farms Road around 7:09 pm June 14 after a neighbor reported the fire. According to Murphy, firefighters worked to extinguish the flames until approximately 11:30 pm.

The fire within the 4,800-square-foot home, built in 1933, presented challenges due to an “incredibly winding and steep” driveway, noted a Facebook post from Botsford Fire Rescue.

The fire left the roof “entirely burned off,” said Murphy.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in the home’s main body and basement.

The mudroom and two-story garage, which housed two vehicles, went undamaged.

Murphy also noted a storm had passed through the area before the incident was reported, though an official cause of the fire has not been determined.

Deputy Fire Marshal Dave Ober stated on June 17 that the investigation is still ongoing.

One first responder was treated at the scene for a minor injury. No other injuries were reported.

No residents or pets were home at the time. The occupants declined assistance from the Red Cross.
