On June 26 at 6:30 pm, Dr Patricia Barkman will be reading excerpts of her new book, Love of Mohawk Valley: An Immigrant’s Journey 1760 to 1776, in the meeting room at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

The Newtown resident will present a brief overview of the book to the audience and will follow the reading with a Q&A session. Barkman will have copies for sale and will be signing books for guests.

This is Barkman’s fourth book. It is a YA historical fiction novel about Aggie Mackenzie, a 16-year-old girl from Scotland, who meets and trains under Molly Brant, an influential Native American leader and ally to Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. The book spans 16 years of Aggie’s life, and “multiple layers of American, Scottish, and Canadian history unfold.”

The book is filled with maps to help young audiences recontextualize the setting as well as hand drawn images by Barkman to help Aggie’s character come alive. The drawings are simplified to mimic what a 16-year-old would draw and serve as an addendum to Aggie’s story.
