Both Vehicles Towed

Newtown Police report Jakob Hessler, 20, of Newtown, was operating a 2018 Subaru Forester that was traveling southbound on South Main Street on May 17 at 6:16 pm. Following behind was Nicholas Davis, 19, of Monroe, operating a 1996 Honda Accord. Hessler stopped in traffic when Davis struck the rear of Hessler’s vehichle. Davis was issued an infraction for following too close.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

Struck Telephone Pole

Newtown Police report Christopher Sherwood, 28, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Model 3 Tesla was traveling southbound on Flat Swamp Road. Damage to the base of CL&P pole #177 was reported after Sherwood swerved to avoid a deer on the roadway at 4 am on May 18. Police officers arrived on scene at 5:51 am. It was determined in the investigation that Sherwood crossed the centerline and was issued an infraction for failure to drive right.

No injuries were reported on the scene. The vehicle was not towed.

DWI Charge

Newtown Police report Jay Rypka, 76, of Newtown, turned himself in at Newtown Police Department on May 23 after learning about a warrant for his arrest. Rypka was charged with an improper turn and DWI following a one-car accident on December 13, 2023 on Huntingtown Road. Rypka was released on a promise to appear in court on June 6.

Hit Vehicle Leaving Driveway

Newtown Police report on May 21 at 1:26 pm, Herbert Marcucilli, 66, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2014 Ford F150 driving north of Washington Avenue when Vincent Patavino of Fort Wayne Indiana, operating a 2003 Ford Taurus, was exiting the driveway at 17 Washington Avenue. Patavino failed to yield right of way to oncoming traffic and Marcucilli hit the front of the Taurus. Patavino was issued a citation for failing to yield to right of way when turning left.

Patavino complained of previous injuries, while Marcucilli reported no injuries. Neither car was towed.

Failure To Keep Safe Distance

Newtown Police report Frederick Hubbard, 20, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2013 Ford F150 on the I-84 Exit 10 off-ramp behind Eric Tanski, 40, of Southbury, operating a 2010 Lexus Es 350 on May 21 at 9:33 am. Tanski was taking a right onto Church Hill Road when Hubbard made contact with the Lexus, causing minor damage. Hubbard was issued a warning for following too close.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Collision On Wasserman Way

Newtown Police report on May 22 at 2:42 pm, Grace Kase, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Subaru Outback was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way approaching Gregory Rodgers. Rodgers was operating a 2015 Mazda Cx-5 Tou in the westbound travel lane waiting to turn left on Wasserman Way. Kase collided with Rodgers, causing damage to both vehicles. Kase was issued an infraction for following too close.

Kase reported minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene. Both vehicles were towed.

Honda CR-V Flipped Over

Newtown Police Report on May 26 at 8:52 pm that Izequias Pereira-DeOliveira, 23, of Monticello, N.Y., was operating a 2019 Honda CR-V northbound on New Lebbon Road when he dodged a deer that ran out into the roadway. Pereira-DeOliveira veered hard to the right, causing him to drive off the roadway, strike a tree, and flip over onto the roof. Pereira-DeOliveira was issued a verbal warning for a restricted turn.

No injuries were reported, but minor injuries were suspected. Pereira-DeOliveira refused EMS response. The vehicle was towed.

Arrest Made On Warrant For Larceny

Newtown Police Report Jason Ennes, 48, of Meriden, was arrested by Newtown Police on May 23 after being notified that he was at the New Haven Police Department. The inciting incident took place on September 18, 2023 at Birch Hill Road in Newtown. Ennes was charged with larceny in the fourth degree and was released on a promise to appear in court on June 6.

Car Went Off Roadway

Newtown Police report Lopes Nascimento, 17, of Southbury, operating a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio GLX went off Grey Plains Road while navigating a left turn on May 19 at 11:43 am. Nascimento struck a utility pole and was issued a verbal warning for traveling unreasonably fast.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Failure To Yield Right Of Way

Newtown Police report on May 23 at 4:59 pm that Kylie Maddox, 19, of Saint Columbia, South Carolina, operating a 2014 GMC Terrain SLE failed to yield to oncoming traffic traveling northbound on South Main Street trying to take a left turn onto Country Club Road. Angel Alarconolive, 29, of New York, N.Y., and Cristian Arita [passenger], 30, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado K3500, was traveling southbound on South Main Street when Maddox collided with the vehicle.

There were no injuries reported for Alarconolive or Arita in the car. Possible injuries were reported for Maddox, though she declined to be transported to Danbury Hospital. Maddox was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way to oncoming traffic. Maddox’s vehicle was towed.

Collision At Intersection

Newtown Police report Serafim De Souza, 36, of Naugatuck, operating a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan ES was travelling north on Toddy Hill Road with a passenger when Stephen Tanneberger, 71, of Southbury, operating a 2015 Hyundai Elantra SE, turned right onto Toddy Hill Road from Sugarloaf Road on May 26 at 11:23 am. Tanneberger believed De Souza was traveling at a high speed when they collided.

De Souza was transported to Danbury Hospital with pain in the right wrist and a bloody nose. No other injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Tanneberger was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Collision During Left Turn

Newtown Police report Michael Sherman, 39, of Southbury, operating a 2021 GMC Sierra K1500 was travelling north on Elm Drive and turned left onto Sugar Street on May 24 at 8:14 am. While making the turn, he collided with Bruce Reynolds, 76, of Newtown operating a 2019 Buick Encore Preferred. Sherman reported there was a box truck in the right lane of Sugar Street that was blocking his view. Sherman was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at left turn.

No injuries were reported and neither vehicle was towed.

Rear-Ended On South Main Street

Newtown Police report on May 25 at 11:06 am that Kevin Bates, 22, of Southbury, operating a 2014 Honda CR-V rear-ended Daniel McElroy operating a 2014 Toyota RAV4 on South Main Street. Bates received a verbal warning for following too close.

No injuries were reported and neither vehicle was towed.

DUI Causes Property Damage

Newtown Police report William Hall, 67, of Newtown, operating a 2005 Dodge Durango on May 23 at 7:34 pm veered off Obtuse Road traveling northbound and struck a stone wall and fence at 18 Obtuse Road. Hall continued to drive north on Obtuse Road, striking a guard rail on the shoulder. Continuing north, the vehicle became disabled due to losing the right front wheel and tire. Hall was unable to provide an account of how this collision occurred. Hall was taken into custody on a DUI charge, failure to maintain proper lane of travel, and evading responsibility causing property damage.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
