Trio Of Nighthawk Teams Win And Advance To State Quarterfinals
Newtown High School's baseball and softball teams went on the road and pulled off upsets and the boys' volleyball team got the job done on home court. All three Nighthawk squads won second-round State Tournament competitions on May 29, and have reached the quarterfinals.
On the baseball diamond, No. 27 Newtown defeated No. 11 South Windsor 8-1 in Class LL action. Wes Keayes was strong on the mound and Jonathan Moseman led the offense with three hits. The Nighthawks will visit No. 19 Staples of Westport in the quarterfinals on Saturday, June 1; game time is set for 1 pm.
Softball Wins 10-0
The No. 9 softball team blanked No. 8 E.O. Smith 10-0 in Storrs. Maddie Thoesen struck out 12 and allowed just two hits. Lila Accousti had two hits, including her first over-the-fence varsity home run, and Thoesen and Addy Cordova also homered. Newtown will visit No. 1 Cheshire in the Class LL quarters on Friday, May 31 at 4:15 pm.
Volleyball Defeats Woodstock Academy
No. 6 Newtown beat No. 11 Woodstock Academy 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 26-24) in the Class M tourney. Nate Twitchell had 14 kills, two blocks, two digs, and two aces. Charlie Hanson had 13 kills, six digs, a block, and three aces. Matt Tomaj had 36 assists, four kills, four digs, and an ace. Eli Sullivan racked up 15 digs. NHS will visit No. 3 Cheshire Friday, May 31, at 6 pm.
Lacrosse Falls
In boys' lacrosse No. 12 Newtown lost 8-4 at No. 5 Simsbury in the second round of the Class L bracket. The Hawks were coming off a 15-2 win over No. 21 Enfield to begin tourney play.
