Too Fast For Conditions
Newtown Police report Alexander Duarte, 21, of New Haven, operating a 2015 Kia Forte, was traveling northbound on Botsford Hill Road towards High Bridge Road at 3:42 am April 19. Duarte traveled under the railroad bridge but failed to negotiate a left-hand turn in the roadway, striking a curb and then traveling up an embankment.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Duarte was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Did Not Stop At Sign
Newtown Police report Koehnin Rodriguez, 19, of Southbury, operating a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, was traveling northbound on Mile Hill Road South at 5:12 pm April 24. William Kinney, 42, of Seymour, operating a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling eastbound on Mile Hill Road. Rodriguez approached the intersection with Mile Hill Road and continued through the clearly posted stop sign without slowing or stopping, and struck the passenger side of Kinney’s vehicle.
All occupants of both vehicles were examined by EMS and declined further medical assistance. Both vehicles were towed.
Rodriguez was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.
Hit Car During Pass
Newtown Police report David Bartkus, 38, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling on Riverside Road at 8:41 pm April 26. He was traveling behind a 2021 Acura TLX operated by Jeremiah Haynes, 22, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Bartkus attempted to pass Haynes and Bartkus struck the rear bumper of Haynes’ vehicle as it slowed down for a curve.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Bartkus was issued an infraction for following too close.
Unregistered Vehicle
Newtown Police report Jennifer Doyon, 44, of Southbury, operating a 2019 Mazda 3, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road south of Old Hawleyville Road at 11:51 am April 29. Herman Valdiviezo, 43, of Danbury, operating a 2000 Ford F550, was traveling ahead of Doyon. The front end of Doyon’s vehicle made contact with the rear of Valdiviezo’s.
No injuries were reported. Doyon’s vehicle was towed.
Doyon was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
Backed Into Car
Newtown Police report Michael Heider, 77, of Redding, operating a 2020 Acura TLX, was backing out of a parking space along the north side of the parking lot at 45 Main Street at 4:30 pm April 29. Heider said he did not see the car parked behind him, and backed into the right front door of a 2020 Honda CR-V owned by Alice Diluoffo of Sandy Hook.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Audi Hits Mercedes
Newtown Police report Stephen Berle, 68, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Audi A7, was backing from a parking stall in the private parking lot at 9 Covered Bridge Road at 2:10 pm May 1. Berle backed into a parked, unoccupied 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE owned by Holly Checchia of Sandy Hook.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Rear-Ended On Church Hill
Newtown Police report Gioia Macey, 58, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Audi A5, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 10:29 am May 2. Kimberly Walker, 55, of Southbury, operating a 2014 BMW 335xi, was stopped in traffic waiting to turn left ahead of Macey. Macey did not stop in time and rear-ended Walker’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Macey was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report Michael Murgatroyd, 25, of Southbury, operating a 2021 Chevrolet Colorado, was traveling north on Swamp Road at 8:10 pm May 2. He was traveling behind a 2023 Toyota Corolla operated by Sharon Krejcir, 59, of Sandy Hook. Krejcir stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of Swamp Road and Botsford Hill Road and Murgatroyd’s vehicle rear-ended Krejcir’s.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Murgatroyd was issued an infraction for following too close.
Unsafe Backing
Newtown Police report Timothy Wilder, 58, of Newtown, operating a 2002 Ford F550, was traveling eastbound on Blakeslee Drive approaching the intersection of Hanover Road at 8:15 am May 3. Anne Fries, 46, of Brookfield, operating a 2022 Subaru Forester, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Blakeslee Drive and Hanover Road. As Wilder approached, Fries activated her hazard lights. Wilder attempted to pass Fries before realizing a school bus was approaching the intersection. Wilder attempted to back up, and struck the front end of Fries’ vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Wilder was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.
Restricted Left Turn
Newtown Police report Natalie Landau, 29, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, was traveling northbound on South Main Street, stopped at the intersection of Country Club Road, at 9:05 am May 3. Micayla Pettway, 30, of Stratford, operating a 2019 Nissan Sentra, was traveling southbound on South Main Street.
Landau turned left in front of Pettway, causing the front of Landau’s vehicle to make contact with the driver’s side of Pettway’s vehicle.
Landau was transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation. Neither vehicle was towed.
Landau was issued an infraction for making a restricted left turn.
Police Chief Stops Car
Newtown Police report that Newtown Police Chief David Kullgren initiated a motor vehicle stop after witnessing a vehicle illegally passing vehicles on the right at the flag pole at 2:38 pm May 3. Following a brief investigation, Kullgren placed Hector Rojacruz, 46, of Bridgeport, under arrest on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension and failure to comply with pass on the right rules.
Rojacruz was released on a promise to appear with a court date of May 16 in Danbury Superior Court.
Incident In Parking Lot
Newtown Police report Amanda Reyes, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2008 Acura TSX, was attempting to back into a parking space at 12 Berkshire Road at 2:47 pm May 3. Heather Hull, 49, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, was driving straight ahead. Reyes backed into Hull’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Hit Car On Mt Pleasant
Newtown Police report Latrell Lyons, 22, of Monroe, N.Y., operating a 2021 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling westbound on Mt Pleasant Road, at 4:08 pm May 3. He was traveling behind a 2015 GMC ACA operated by Kevin Murray, 19, of Chester, N.Y. Lyons rear-ended Murray’s vehicle as they slowed for traffic.
No injuries were reported. Lyons’ vehicle was towed.
Lyons was issued a written warning for following too close.
Illegal Pass
Newtown Police report De Sousa Oliveira, 54, of Newtown, operating a 2015 GMC Sierra, was traveling northbound on Main Street at 9:13 pm May 3. He was traveling behind a 2010 Cadillac CTS operated by Robert Helsel, 68, of Newtown. Helsel went to turn left onto Martin Street and Oliveira attempted to pass on the left, causing Helsel’s vehicle to strike Oliveira’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Helsel’s vehicle was towed.
Oliveira was issued an infraction for passing in a no passing zone.
Hit And Run
Newtown Police report Apurba Basak, 76, of Warren, N.J., was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road approaching the intersection of Pole Bridge Road at 9:38 am May 4. Basak slowed down and signaled to make a left turn onto Pole Bridge Road. An unidentified vehicle described as a black sedan traveling behind Basak rear-ended Basak’s vehicle and then left the scene.
No injuries were reported. Basak’s vehicle was not towed.
Lost Cell Phone
At 11 am May 4, a cell phone was located on the walking trail of the Fairfield Hills property.

Struck Embankment
Newtown Police report Joshua Muckerman, 26, of New Milford, operating a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling southbound on Botsford Hill Road at 8:32 pm May 5. Muckerman ran off the roadway left, striking an embankment.
Three of the backseat passengers were evaluated on-scene by EMS but declined transport. The vehicle was not towed.
Muckerman was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Morocho Lalvay, 26, of Waterbury, operating a 2002 Chevrolet Express, was traveling northbound on Hattertown Road and came to a stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Route 302 at 8:28 am May 6. Yentl Macias, 31, of Danbury, operating a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling eastbound on Route 302. Lalvay proceeded into the intersection and the front right section of his vehicle made contact with the right side of Macias’ vehicle.
Macias was transported to Danbury Hospital for a possible injury. Neither vehicle was towed.
Lalvay was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating with a suspended license and failure to grant right of way from a stop sign. Lalvay was given a court date of May 21 in Danbury Superior Court. Two passengers in Lalvay’s vehicle were given verbal warnings for failing to wear a seat belt.
