Hayden Bobowick And Relay Set Records For Track Team

Newtown High School’s boys’ track team had a couple of record-setting runs in meets this past week.

Hayden Bobowick ran the 200 meter dash on Senior Night, May 1, and not only won the race but beat Marcus Tracy’s 2005 school record with an official time of 22.54, then broke the record again, in a meet at Brookfield High on May 7. Bobowick’s new mark is 22.24.

Bobowick, Gabe Appiah, Elias Brady, and Aydyn Gonzalez ran at the Crusader Relays in Central Valley, N.Y., this past weekend to compete in the 800 sprint medley relay. They took first place and also set a new Crusader Relays meet record and broke the NHS school record by more than five seconds with a time of 1:33.87.

In the home meet on May 1 the boys scored 69.5 points. Weston had 46, New Milford 22, and New Fairfield 12.5. Bobowick won the 100 in 11.2 seconds. Noah Masotta won the 1600 in 4:35. Jayden Taylor took the top spot in the 110 hurdles in 16.1. Masotta won the 300 hurdles in 43.9. The 4x100 relay of Gonzalez, Grady Marks, Taylor, and Appiah was first in 43.8. Jack Chappa took first in the shot-put with a throw of 41-5.5. Dominic Simpri won the high jump clearing the bar at 6 feet. Appiah won the long jump with a 20-7.5.

In the meet at Brookfield, NHS defeated Brookfield 88.5-39.5 and topped Immaculate of Danbury 109.67-16.33. In addition to his 200 meter race win Bobowick was first in the 100 in 10.8. Soheib Dissa won the 1600 in 4:22.6. Taylor won the 110 hurdles in 15.6. The 4x100 relay comprising Appiah, Marks, Taylor, and Gonzalez was first in 44.4. Chapa was first in the shot-put with a 43-5.5 and won discus with a 130-1, as well as taking the top spot in the javelin event with a 122-7. Simpri was first in the high jump clearing the bar at 5-8. Jerimiah Stone won the pole vault competition clearing 7 feet. Appiah was first in long jump with a 20-4.

The Newtown girls raced at Brookfield High on May 6. NHS beat Brookfield 103.5-46.5 and defeated Immaculate 129-20. Grace Lyons won the 200 in 25.7. Ana Morris was first in the 800 in 2:30.6. Keira Budge took the top spot in the 1600 with a time of 5:40.8. Clara D’Amico won the 3200 in 13:46.9. Liz Anesi won the 300 hurdles in 51.1. Newtown’s 4x400 relay of Budge, Kelsey Brennan, Lyla Kopp, and Taylor LeRow was first in 4:32.7. The 4x800 relay team of D’Amico, Leah Morris, Budge, and Lyons was first in 9:56.2. Izzy Khazadian won the shot-put event with a 27-8.50. Lola Kessler won the pole vault competition clearing 9-6. Ella Hall was tops in the triple jump with a 31-1. Coach Becky Bourret noted that Jessie Moore’s second-place 400 run in a personal record time of 61.3 was outstanding given she just returned from injury.
