Town Snowplow
Police report an accident involving a town snowplow truck about 10:33 am on April 2 on Johnson Drive, a dead-end street that extends from Riverside Road.
During snowplowing operations on Johnson Drive, Jeffrey Thomas, 44, of Southbury, while driving a town-owned 2014 Dodge Ram 5500 dump truck/snowplow, was traveling southward while backing up in reverse gear. At that time, motorist Noelle Veillette, 20, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2006 Saab 9-3 auto northward, police said. The Dodge then backed into the Saab, according to police.
There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Thomas for unsafe backing.
DUI/Paraphernalia
Police said they received a report about 6:16 pm on April 1 that there was a woman who appeared to be passed out in a vehicle near the Blue Colony Diner at 66 Church Hill Road, so they went there to investigate.
Police performed sobriety tests on the person in question - Jennifer Jiampietro, 54, of Springfield, Mass. Also, police said their search of the vehicle turned up many hypodermic needles. A test of some residue found on one of the needles appeared to indicate that the residue was fentanyl, an opioid which is used as a pain medication, according to police.
Police arrested Jiampietro on charges of driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jiampietro was held on $1,000 bail for an April 2 appearance in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury. She pleaded not guilty to both charges at her arraignment and was released on a written promise to appear in court April 23.
Dayton Street
At about 7:24 pm on April 1, motorist Gary Douglas, 32, of Bridgeport, was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee SUV southward on Dayton Street, when a cat ran out onto the road, police said. Douglas then swerved to the left to avoid striking the cat, but in doing so, the vehicle struck some metal-beam guardrailing. There were no injuries.
Larceny/Forgery Charges
Newtown police report that on the morning of March 31, they traveled to Stamford and were accompanied by Stamford police when they served an arrest warrant against Angelina Zarrella, 38, at her home there.
Newtown police transported Zarrella to the Newtown police station and then charged her with one count of third-degree larceny and with 25 counts of third-degree forgery. Police allege that Zarrella fraudulently cashed checks 25 times. Third-degree larceny involves the theft of items valued at between $2,000 and $10,000.
The police investigation that resulted in the charges stemmed from a January 26, 2017, complaint. Zarrelle posted $3,000 bail and was released for an April 12 court appearance.
Three Vehicles
Police report a three-vehicle accident at the hazardous intersection of Berkshire Road, Bennetts Bridge Road, and Grays Plain Road about 10:41 am on March 31.
Motorist Meilssa Abbott, 50, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2012 Kia Soul SUV westward on Berkshire Road, as motorist Minghui Li Johnson, 53, of Brookline, Mass., who was driving a 2010 Honda Accord eastward on Berkshire Road, was preparing to make a left turn onto northbound Bennetts Bridge Road.
As the Honda attempted to turn left, the Kia then struck the Honda, after which the Honda struck a 2006 Nissan X-Terra SUV driven by Bonnie Lundblad, 27, of Sandy Hook, which was waiting on southbound Bennetts Bridge Road to make a left turn onto eastbound Berkshire Road.
There were no injuries.
Johnson received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.
Probation Violation
At about 6:43 pm on March 31, police observed a traffic violation by a motorist traveling on Mile Hill Road, so they stopped motorist Richard Mullings, 50, of Bridgeport to investigate.
Newtown Police said they learned that Ansonia police held a warrant for Mullings' arrest. Thus, Mullings was charged with violation of probation. After posting $1,000 bail, Mullings was released from custody for an April 13 appearance in Derby Superior Court.
DUI Warrant
After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Natalie Svanda, 22, of Easton, went to the police station on the morning of March 29 and was charged in connection with an early morning motor vehicle accident on Taunton Hill Road that occurred on December 28.
Police charged Svanda with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and failure to have automotive insurance.
Police have reported that Svanda was driving a 2010 Ford Focus auto southward on Taunton Hill Road, just north of its intersection with Wedgewood Court, when while attempting to negotiate a curve in the road, the vehicle crossed the road's center line and then traveled off the left road shoulder, struck a stone wall, and then overturned.
After arrest processing on March 29, police released Svanda on $200 bail for an April 12 court appearance.
Moving Violations
Police report that at about 9:33 am on March 28, they stopped motorist Kevin Barbosa, 23, of Danbury, near the intersection of South Main Street and Ethan Allen Road after learning that the registration on the vehicle he was driving was suspended.
After investigating, police charged Barbosa with driving with a suspended registration and driving without automotive insurance. Police released Barbosa for an April 12 court appearance on the charges.
Four Charges
Police said that at about 9:46 am on March 28, they stopped motorist Jaroslaw Gosk, 48, of Newtown, on The Boulevard and investigated, charging Gosk with fourth-degree larceny, credit card theft, illegal use of a credit card, and third-degree identity theft.
Police said their probe indicated that Gosk had stolen a credit card and used it illegally at various locations. Police said they had received a complaint on the matter at 4:35 pm on March 20.
After processing on March 28, police released Gosk on $2,500 bail for an April 11 court appearance.
Shoplifting
Police report that after receiving a complaint from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street at about 2 pm on March 28, they responded to investigate an alleged incident of shoplifting.
Police report that after investigating, they charged Meghann Freeman, 34, of Sandy Hook, with sixth-degree larceny and with first-degree criminal trespassing. After processing, Freeman was released for an April 12 court appearance on the charges.
Intersection Accident
Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way about 4:09 pm on March 28.
In that incident, motorist Michael Watson, 49, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, struck the rear end of a 2017 Honda Accord sedan driven by Lisa Carino, 54, of Sandy Hook, police said.
There were no injuries. Watson received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.
Breach of Peace
Police a report that after receiving a complaint, they investigated on March 27 and charged George Tarby, 49, of Sandy Hook with second-degree breach of peace.
Police said that Tarby allegedly had made threatening statements to a person with whom he had a telephone conversation. Police released Tarby on a written promise to appear in court on April 10.
Warrant
After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Austin Bliss-Martinez, 19, of Newtown went to the police station on the evening of March 27, and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction in connection with a past violation, police said.
After processing, police released him on $500 bail for an April 10 court appearance.
Ford Vs Mercedes
at about 4:50 pm on March 27, motorist Teresa Lacroce, 53, of Newtown, who was driving a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-300 auto southward on Main Street, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Schoolhouse Hill Road, after which the Mercedes was struck from behind by southbound motorist Anthony Infantino, 29, of Brewster, N.Y., who was driving a 2012 Ford Escape SUV, police said.
There were no injuries. Infantino received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Intersection Accident
Police report a two-vehicle accident about 6:17 pm on March 27 at the four-way intersection of Hattertown Road, Key Rock Road, and Poverty Hollow Road, each leg of which is controlled by a stop sign.
Involved in the collision were motorist Brooke Heinen, 43, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2011 Audi A-4 auto, and motorist Anna Maria Zamfino-Kroesen, 56, of Newtown who was driving a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman auto. There were no injuries.
Police issued Heinen a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
Car Vs Pole
Motorist Michael Urban, 66, of Newtown was driving a 2004 Chevrolet sedan eastward on Borough Lane, east of its intersection with Elm Drive, at about 7:33 am on March 27, when he became blinded by sun glare, veered off the left road shoulder, and struck a utility pole, heavily damaging the pole, police said.
There were no injuries. The section of Borough Lane between its intersections with Elm Drive and South Main Street was closed to through-traffic for about six hours while a utility crew replaced the damaged pole.
Police issued Urban an infraction for making a restricted turn.
MV Violations
After determining that her vehicle's registration was likely expired, police stopped motorist Tania Delima, 34, of Bridgeport, near the intersection of South Main Street and Elizabeth Street to investigate at about 5:16 pm on March 26.
Police then charged Delima with driving an unregistered vehicle and with driving with a suspended license. Delima is scheduled to appear in court on those charges on April 11. Newtown police then turned over Delima to Bridgeport police who held an arrest warrant for her on a charge of first-degree criminal mischief stemming from a 2013 incident.
Four Charges
Police said that after they learned that motorist Brian Small, 40, of Waterbury, was driving a vehicle which likely had an illegal rear marker plate on it, they stopped Small to investigate, near the intersection of Toddy Hill Road and Deerfield Drive at about 6:27 am on March 23.
Police said they charged Small with misuse of a marker plate, failure to have a front marker plate, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance.
Police said an electronic records check indicated that there were arrest warrants pending against Small from police departments in Stratford, Naugatuck, Waterbury, Fairfield, and Shelton. Those warrants involved various allegations of larceny and fraud, police said.
In connection with the four motor vehicle charges, police released Small for an April 10 appearance in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury. Newtown police then gave custody of Small to Stratford police for arrest processing.
Intersection Collision
At about 2:28 pm on March 23, motorist Elizabeth Llera, 24, of Valrico, Fla., was driving a 2006 Hyundai Accent southward on Hattertown Road, as motorist Valerie Thomas, 64, of Redding was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue SUV eastward from Poverty Hollow Road to Key Rock Road, police said.
The Hyundai then violated a stop sign at the four-way intersection of those three roads, resulting in a collision. Each leg of the intersection is controlled by a stop sign.
There were no injuries. Llera received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.
Warrant
Police report that on the afternoon of March 23, they arrested Erik Caceres, 25, of Danbury on a warrant, charging him with fifth-degree larceny in connection with a November 15, 2017, shoplifting incident at TJ Maxx at Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street.
Fifth-degree larceny involves the theft of items valued at between $500 and $1,000. Caceres was released on $2,500 bail for an April 6 court appearance.
DUI Incident
Police report that at about 8:07 pm on March 23, they received a report concerning an erratically driven white Volkswagen Beetle auto, so they responded and located that vehicle near the intersection of Queen Street and Glover Avenue.
Police said they saw the motorist swerving and changing speeds as he traveled, so they stopped the Volkswagen to investigate.
They charged motorist Jeffrey Richardson, 53, of Brookfield, with driving under the influence, failure to maintain the travel lane, and driving an unregistered vehicle. After processing, police released Richardson on $1,000 bail for an April 6 court appearance.
Sandy Hook Burglary
Police report that on the afternoon of March 22, they received a call informing them that someone, sometime late that morning, had illegally entered a house on Osborne Hill Road Extension.
Police responded to investigate and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.
Philo Curtis Accident
Police report a two-vehicle accident on a narrow, curving section of Philo Curtis Road, just north of its intersection with Pearl Street about 2:11 pm on March 22.
Motorist Jillian Standish, 36, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV southward, as motorist Jordan Stofko, 17, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty SUV northward. As the two vehicles passed each other, their left exterior rear-view mirrors made physical contact, according to police. There were no injuries.
Police took no enforcement.
Slippery Road
Motorist Kaimaura Foraker, 25, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2015 Hyundai Accent compact car westward on Interstate 84, about 10:40 pm on March 21, lost control of the vehicle on slippery pavement, after which it spun out onto the highway median and struck some guardrailing there, state police said. There were no injuries.
State police verbally warned Foraker for traveling too fast for conditions.
Wasserman Way/Exit 11
a two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Wasserman Way and the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84 at about 7:37 pm on March 20.
The accident involved motorist Massimo Mendonca, 18, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2009 Saturn Aura sedan, and motorist Diane Licata, 47, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Highlander SUV, police said.
There were no injuries. Mendonca received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.
Rear-Ender
On westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, about 8:40 am on March 19, motorist Gabriel Tuesta-Hidalgo, 24, of Oxford, who was driving a 2013 Toyota Scion FR-S sports car, struck the rear end of a 2008 Audi A-6 sedan driven by Denise Laforgia, 70, of Brookfield, state police report.
There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.
SUV Vs SUV
Police report a two-vehicle accident at Main Street's flagpole intersection at about 1:38 pm on March 19.
Motorist Brian Durling, 34, of Newtown was driving a 2013 Jeep Patriot SUV northward on Main Street, just ahead of northbound motorist Kathryn Nash, 35, of Newtown, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV.
Due to the maneuvering of a large truck, which was making a difficult left turn from westbound Church Hill Road onto southbound Main Street, the Jeep backed up, but in doing so, the Jeep backed into the Hyundai. There were no injuries.
Police verbally warned Durling for unsafe backing, and gave Nash an infraction for driving a vehicle with a canceled registration.
Interstate DUI
State police report that motorist Christopher Giordano, 53, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2017 Ford Fusion sedan on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, at about 4:07 pm on March 19, veered out of his travel lane and struck 2017 Jeep Wrangler SUV. There were no injuries.
After that impact, Giordano drove away and then got off the highway at Exit 9, after which he headed northward on Hawleyville Road (Route 25), according to state police. The Ford driven by Giordano was located several miles away, near the intersection of Route 25 and Long Meadow Hill Road in Brookfield Center.
After investigating, state police arrested Giordano, charging him with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and evading responsibility. Giordano posted $1,000 nonsurety bail for an April 5 court appearance before a judge for arraignment on the charges.
Four-Way Intersection
Police report an accident at about 8:27 am on March 16 at the intersection of Hattertown Road, Key Rock Road, and Poverty Hollow Road, all four legs of which are controlled by stop signs.
Motorist Susan Johnson, 48, of Newtown, who was driving a 2005 Saturn Vue SUV northward on Hattertown Road, violated a stop sign and then struck motorist Susan Dorazio, 48, of Newtown, who entered the intersection from Poverty Hollow Road in a 2013 Ford Explorer SUV. There were no injuries.
Police verbally warned Johnson for a stop sign violation.
South Main Street
At about 3:22 pm on March 14, motorist Hugh Carey, 76, of Newtown, who was driving a 2013 Toyota Sienna minivan, was exiting a commercial driveway on South Main Street in order to head southward, as motorist Alexander Moreno, 16, of Monroe, was driving southward on South Main Street, police said.
The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries.
Police issued Carey an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.
